💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀❓ That's one of the many questions Ayming put in the 2024 International Innovation Barometer to 1,053 R&D and innovation directors, CEOs, CFOs and entrepreneurs in 17 countries across Europe, the USA and Asia. Here's what emerged: 🔵 38% of those surveyed said the most common obstacle is short-term focus and the 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀, which makes innovation planning even more difficult. 🔵 The second biggest obstacle to innovation is the 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁. Curiously, among the least popular innovation priorities are attracting talent and fostering a culture of creativity, given the increasing complexity of R&D. 🔵 Smaller companies are much more likely to suffer from a lack of available skills and talent (37%) or a clear innovation strategy (34%) than larger companies, which face 𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘂𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆, particularly in the construction sector. The International Innovation Barometer 2024 also analyzes 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 and the most important challenges facing forward-looking companies. Download the full report for all the data 👇

As a densely populated, highly developed and industrialised region, Flanders wants (and needs) to contribute to a sustainable climate and energy transition. At VITO we support this goal in numerous ways. One of our latest contributions: an analysis tool developed with our partners for VLAIO's MOONSHOT programme, designed to evaluate the sustainability of innovations right from the start. This tool not only measures potential economic feasibility and environmental impact of an innovation but also guides researchers towards the most sustainable technology configurations. It's about making informed decisions early on, ensuring that our strides in innovation lead to real, positive change. However, It doesn't stop there. VITO is translating the work done for VLAIO to the EIC (European Innovation Council), specifically in evaluating the impact of emerging solar-to-X technologies. And last but not least we are working on a training programme for companies based on the methodology used at VLAIO and EIC. Interested? How sustainable is an innovation really? VITO develops a tool to map that out from the start

⭕𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐬. It also involves: - Adapting to change - Encouraging collaboration - Nurturing creativity - Implementing sustainable practices When I first explored the realm of green innovation, it was to understand and share insights about sustainable development goals. But it soon evolved into a journey of personal transformation; discipline, good habits, and a newfound respect for our environment became a part of my daily life. A local entrepreneur shared, "Since we adapted cleaner production methods, we've seen a significant reduction in waste and a boost in our efficiency." To me, that is what innovation is all about. Not about the number of patents registered Not the size of the R&D team Not the budget allocated for research Not the media attention gained But the real impact it creates. When you're acknowledged for your contributions to sustainability – that is true innovation. What does innovation mean to you? #GreenInnovation #Sustainability

For the next two weeks, we'll be sharing our research findings in English here on our LinkedIn! Kicking off, we present our Policy Brief on how to support sustainability transformation with innovation policy. Find the link in the comments below! We recommend the following procedures to develop innovation policy: 1. Set solving sustainability challenges as the target of innovation policy 2. Recognise the sustainable competence areas of the future 3. Ensure the responsibility of research and innovation activity 4. Renew ecologically and socially damaging industries 5. Develop management and ensure that sustainability targets are realised in the implementation of policies. Traditionally, the strengthening of economic growth, productivity and national competitiveness have been seen as targets of innovation policy. Besides targets that emphasise growth, promoting sustainability has risen as a cross-cutting target of different policy fields. Finland will face significant sustainability challenges in the upcoming years. In addition to the economic basis of our society, we are challenged by issues such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, ageing of the population as well as growing inequality. In Finland, environmental and social sustainability challenges have not been significantly taken into account in the targets or implementation of innovation policy. Innovation policy can act as a significant force for promoting sustainability transformation, if it adopts new procedures. Innovation policy has risen back to the national agenda, especially with the parliamentary working group on research, development and innovation (RDI). In Finland, actors are quite unanimous in that innovation expenditure has to be increased to four percent of gross domestic product by 2030. A funding act is being planned, and it will define the annual research and development expenditure of the state to a level needed to achieve this target. The increase of the innovation policy funding by billions in the upcoming years must be targeted in ways which promote the sustainability transformation of our society – a fair transformation in the limits of the carrying capacity of the environment. Impact Innovation! Impact Innovation is one of Sweden's major innovation investments for the 2030s. The program's aim is to increase the pace of green transitioning and strengthen our international competitiveness. The first 5 programs to receive funding have now been approved and I am thrilled that SustainGov is one of these and that Digg – Myndigheten för digital förvaltning (Swedish Agency for Digital Government) is involved! I and my colleague Karin García Ambrosiani look forward to a busy few years with things kicking off under the remainder of Q1 2024. The approved programs focus on sustainable and resilient industry, sustainable metal and mineral supply, the management of water resources, a reformed public sector, and sustainable community building and mobility. SustainGov and our involvement in it will focus on a number of governance issues and stakeholder involvement that is vital for our decentralised governance model to function and live up to citizen expectations and needs. The program is led by Mid Sweden University in collaboration with, among others, Digg, Sweden's municipalities and regions, the School of Economics, Sweden's University of Agriculture (SLU) and Samhällsnytta at Karlstad University. Read more about each in the link (Swedish site) and a MidUniversity press release in the comments.
