A beautiful first for the #ReusablePackagingCoalition. 🇧🇪♻️ Congrats to the retailers in the Flemish region of Mechelen for joining forces to make a step towards offering more reusable packaging options for supermarket consumers. A project that checks the first steps* of a sound reuse system: 🤝 1. Strong partnership 🔩 2. Choose a suitable packaging ⏎ 3. Thought through retour logistic 📥 4. Collection of the packaging 🧼 5. Cleaning and drying ... To succeed in the #TransitionTowardsReuse, we need more collaborations like this between big players such as retailers (and producers). Looking forward to seeing and learning from the project in place. And to follow the next steps (usage of the packaging for more products, in more cities etc.) So, if you pass in one of the participating stores in 2025, get a #Reusable box of mushrooms ... and don't forget to bring it back! 📥🔙 *More about the steps of a good reuse system? Look at this impressive refill station in Germany. Beginning in late 2023, REWE Group has launched trials for unpackaged food stations, offering dry goods such as rice, pasta, and cereals. As a pioneer in Germany, REWE has collaborated with the Czech start-up MIWA to implement digital, user-friendly, and hygienic stations. These stations not only promote sustainability but also support a circular economy by providing customers with the option to borrow reusable cups and trays for a refundable deposit of EUR 1.50 or 2.50. Customers are also welcome to bring their own durable containers. Initiatives like this from Europe are exactly what we hope to see from major retailers in Australia. 🌍 A Unique Collaboration: Uniting Retailers for a Circular Future! 🌟 Did you know it’s a global rarity for all major retailers to join forces on a single initiative? In Belgium, Albert Heijn België, ALDI Belgium, Carrefour, Colruyt Group, Delhaize Belgium, and Lidl Belgium & Luxemburg are breaking new ground through the Reusable Packaging Coalition. This initiative is taking an innovative leap in the retail sector by exploring reusable packaging solutions. The first pilot focuses on transitioning to reusable packaging for mushrooms in the city of Mechelen—a small step with a big impact! 🍄♻️ At Fost Plus, I’m thrilled to work with my colleague Hélène Snyers to dive deep into the business model and consumer behavior behind this transformative shift. Together, we’re analyzing the scalability and standardization needed to make reusable packaging a practical and effective reality. Foodleaders gathered last week at one of the biggest events to date in Convenience 2.024 at ZiN Inspiratielab by Sligro Food Group in Veghel. Marketleading companies such as Domino's and Albron as well as SushiPoint Nederland presented interactive workshops sharing their views on convenience as well as interacted to solve challenges to become even more relevant. I had the honor to collaborate with Fernand Molenschot from StarCuisine and facilitate a workshop on the relevance of meals in convenience and how to enable operations to overcome barriers in scaling up. Besides all the insights shared we had a most pleasant time with participants. We captured valuable learnings to implement: 💪 The biggest challenge to beat: How to get that 'blisspoint' where the salt-sugar-sour 'rush' is getting food tastiest and get it on plate affordable, sustainable & healthy? 🍽 The definition of cooking is changing: People across most generations will spend less time in their kitchen and will continue to explore ways to get their need for 'value for time' fulfilled. 💸 Businesses have to shift from 'costprice' to 'valueprice': currently prices in retail for fresh convenience meals are definitely too low. Although suppliers can be more critical on getting balance in their assortment more and better story telling is needed to get benefits in the consumer mindset. 🤖 Creating scalable mass customization: The current convenience supplier landscape is fragmented with almost private label only. It requires 'champions league' performance to deliver every day. Consolidation in different categories will increase to warrant the big investment tickets in technology for mass customization. From what I have seen and heard there is more than enough tenacity and spirit in the landscape to increase collaboration and come up with creative business models to further grow the convenience market and contribute to a sustainable food system. Grocery deliveries in the Netherlands co­­­­­me in va-Q-tec totes 🌡️🧊📦🔄 Albert Heijn, the market-leading Dutch supermarket chain from Ahold Delhaize, uses vacuum-insulated reusable totes from va-Q-tec for the home delivery of groceries. The use of passive totes renders these home deliveries of fresh and frozen products to be more sustainable and cost-efficient. The totes allow for constant temperatures without needing an external energy supply during the transport and up to the delivery at the customer. The use of actively operated refrigerated delivery vehicles, as well as the use of dry ice, are avoided. Packaging waste and product losses are also reduced, particularly during the summer months. “We are very happy to have gained such an important partner with Albert Heijn for our sustainable transport solutions. The totes were specifically developed for transporting groceries. As a company, we share the vision of an energy-saving and environmentally friendly supply system.
