Last week I had three separate conversations with Heads Of at large UK charities. They are all working to embed a more agile approach but struggling to get senior level leadership buy in. It reminds me of this brilliant conversation I had with Gareth Ellis-Thomas last year about how he got the buy in needed from the SLT at Prostate Cancer UK to bring in an Agile Lead, begin creating organisation-wide agile OKRs and start embedding agile right across the organisation (not just fundraising, comms and marketing). Agile working requires influencing at the team and management levels 4. Find advocates and a community of agile change-makers 5. Over the last several weeks I have shared some information regarding my plans to complete another marathon in an effort to raise money for ALS research through Tackle ALS. I have not yet asked directly for your help, so here it is. When I was diagnosed with ALS almost four years ago, I initially thought my life was over. But by the grace of God, I met Tim Green and Dr. Merit Cudkowicz Mass General Department of Neurology. Here is what Tim showed me. You can live an incredibly full and impactful life with ALS. It would not be easy, but it could be awesome. And here is what I learned from Merit, ALS is a curable disease. There are already many promising treatments and even more game changing treatments on the horizon, but there is simply not enough money. So I decided to do something about it by setting a goal of raising $1M for ALS research through TackleALS. The reason I chose TackleALS is simple. Every penny goes directly to support research and access to new treatments for more patients. To date we have raised almost $400,000 and since the announcement of the marathon we have already raised another $90,000. So here is my heartfelt request: 1. PLEASE share this post. 2. Charities and Start-Ups may not seem to be natural bedfellows; the former require stability, the latter built 'at risk', yet last night at the Royal Society Macmillan Cancer Support asked the question 'Can Charities Afford Not to Invest in Start-ups?' The event was part of the successful 'Green Rooms' series and was informed by Macmillan's work through Impact Investment. The first three recipients of investment Stephen Towe, Umaima Malik Ahmad and Antony Rix gave compelling elevator pitches as to why their companies can improve the experiences and outcomes for people living with cancer. It was then fascinating to join with Umaima, investment experts Tej Panesar and Joe Stringer and build on the premise, chaired by Steven McIntosh It would be easy (easier?) for charities to step away from VC investment in start-ups - there are others wanting to be in that space - however there are opportunities here to shift some agendas, bring the perspective of people affected by cancer to the table and drive for outcomes that reverse inequities and tackle the problems that matter. The panel and audience joined in to highlight all the many bumps in the road but also the some of the routes to success, one of which we hope will be our new giving club (Frontier Funders Club) which will help us target transformative innovation. There are many questions to answer; how do we ensure innovations succeed and, crucially spread so that benefits are for all? and how to we manage that balance of risk and reward whilst fulfilling charitable mission? Those questions dominated in the lively chat after the event and I was very grateful to those who shared insight and inspirations with me afterwards. The panel were honest; charities can afford *not* to invest in start-ups, but with care, courage and compassion it seems to be a good step to take.

Melanie shares her story about losing a friend to ovarian cancer and caring for someone who was dying. The secret sauce of an effective community fundraising campaign is that it narrows down a key and sometimes overlooked part of the cause and takes an opportunity to educate through physical engagement. Sadly, the best and most effective kids’ cancer treatments in terms of survival are often the most damaging to young bodies and more likely to result in a poor quality of life. Late effects programs offer rehabilitation strategies to help kids reclaim as much of a missed childhood as possible, while also contributing to the work needed to one day no longer require such programs. Essentially, helping kids like Hugo to be healthy enough to take part in activities like The Kids' Cancer Project's The Better Challenge. People are given the opportunity to, inspired by Hugo, set their own personal goal and walk/run 90km (or any customised version best suiting) this month, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Whether it be regarding fitness, recovery, getting more outdoor time, walking a ridiculously cute dog, settling yourself and clearing your head, or finding the motivation for cutting your time down on a stuffy packed bus to go to work, and spending part of the commute in the fresh air. Ultimate supporter satisfaction is where getting involved and helping others provides fulfilment and adrenaline powerful enough to go out and smash any challenge. I’m looking forward to each year seeing The Kids’ Cancer Project and the incredible #childhoodcancerresearchers and programs we fund enable more and more #kidscancer survivors to enter #thebetterchallenge.
