Day 4 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth: A city at the edge. We believe that viewing Plymouth as a city on the edge allows us to embrace our past, bringing it forward in a positive manner and tapping into the potential found in the transitional #liminal spaces - amidst our dialogue, between people, and between organisations. Exciting! At the edge geographically, at the edge of the ocean, the edge of the county, in the far south west of the country. Practically, at the edge of power and on the edge (including the forefront) of practice. At the edge of intersecting communities, it holds the strengths and tensions and benefits of being a military, university, and working class city all at once. Historically, it has been a valued friend to #power (see its naval history), a neglected friend (see the Plymouth blitz and its silencing) and also a rebellious enemy (see the Siege of Plymouth) of power. A city of many neighbourhoods, it hosts both prosperity and deprivation in differing forms - indeed, where there may not be material wealth there is often community wealth. Welcomeness, civic action, determination, grit and mutual support are a key part of the city’s social character. This is seen in POP’s membership of 380 active and diverse groups and that 26% of adult residents in Plymouth volunteer at least once per month. A few months ago, Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted an important milestone in Detroit's revitalization: creating "a city where people of all income levels are able to live in any neighborhood." The West Euclid Gateway project, which we proudly supported, will bring 20 fully renovated affordable housing units to Detroit's Virginia Park neighborhood. Working together with partners at Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Detroit Housing for the Future Authority, as well as CENTRAL DETROIT CHRISTIAN CDC and 360 DETROIT, we're creating quality homes for families that breathe new life into the community. As Darnell Adams, our VP of Detroit Community Initiatives, shared: "Our mission is to drive inclusive growth and opportunity within Detroit's neighborhoods." This project exemplifies that commitment by providing quality, affordable housing and supporting vital neighborhood nonprofits. 🚧 Atlanta City Council Development Updates 🚧 The Atlanta City Council recently approved several key development initiatives that will shape the city's future: -$1.4M for Affordable Housing: Funds allocated to the Metro Atlanta Land Bank for redeveloping foreclosed properties with a focus on affordable housing (24-O-1507). -$10.8M FEMA Grant: Funding to expand sheltering capacity for non-citizen migrants, providing essential services like food and transportation (24-O-1506). -Gulch Housing Trust Fund: $8.5M set aside to support affordable housing as part of the Atlanta Gulch Project (24-O-1521). -Grove Park Revitalization: $250,000 donation to support leadership in Grove Park and Westin Heights neighborhoods (24-R-4109). -Centennial Yards Streets Project: The Council seeks a $2M federal grant for the Reconnecting Communities Pilot Planning (24-R-4187). -2 Peachtree Property: Committed financial assistance to redevelop this property into a transformative, mixed-use development (24-R-4115). Items Introduced for Consideration: -$100M for Construction & Renovation: An ordinance to approve agreements for city-wide construction services for the next three years. -$750,000 for Park Pride: Additional funding to support disinvested communities through the Community Park Fund, beginning in Fiscal Year 2025. -$201,000 for Windsor Street Park: Contributions to fund lighting and ADA improvements at Windsor Street Park.
