🌍 "Our conditions are defined by our own choices." 🌍 In a world where we often look to institutions and leaders to steer the course, this perspective asks us to turn inward. Democracy isn’t just a system; it’s a reflection of the collective decisions we make, each choice shaping the society we live in. 🤔 Are we truly making choices that uphold the values we want for our future, or are we letting others decide for us? 📢 Join the conversation: What role do you think personal responsibility plays in shaping our democratic landscape? This quote is extracted from our research on perceptions about democracy published in April 2024. 📢 This #InternationalDemocracyDay, civil society calls on EU leaders to take decisive actions to foster a vibrant civic space, uphold democracy and safeguard fundamental rights. The open letter #EUCivicSpaceNow, initiated by Civil Society Europe (CSE) and backed by 416 civil society organisations – including the Maecenata Stiftung | Maecenata Foundation –, from 26 Member States and 4 EU candidate countries, is addressed to the upcoming Polish, Danish, and Cypriot Presidencies of the Council of the #EuropeanUnion, as well as the Presidents of the #EuropeanCommission and the #EuropeanParliament. The letter outlines concrete actions to promote democracy, enable, support and protect civil society, strengthen civil dialogue and protect human rights amid growing concerns over the erosion of democracy in the EU. Specifically, it calls for prioritising: 1️⃣ A European Civil Society Strategy 2️⃣ A strong mandate for a Commission Vice President responsible for democracy, civic space and civil dialogue 3️⃣ The adoption of a Civil Dialogue Agreement 4️⃣ Empowering funding policies 5️⃣ A European Democracy Semester 6️⃣ A stronger role of the Fundamental Rights Agency Read the letter, share and support the cause! 👉 https://bit.ly/3zjaaXe

Since I started working on democratic innovation more than five years ago and learnt about the promise of citizens' assemblies, I've always wanted to better understand how they could help tackle the challenges that Central Eastern European region, where I was raised, is facing. During the past year I had a chance to do just that as an Europe's Futures fellow, supported by IWM - Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen and ERSTE Foundation. For years, the region has been a battleground for democratic values. Internal challenges—rising populism and eroded civic trust—are exacerbated by external threats, particularly Russian interference. Citizens’ assemblies offer a way to push back. And they are gaining traction in the region since 2016. Data shows we will see a doubling of countries implementing them in 2024-2025. However this work is not easy. Interviews with practitioners from the region highlight both the challenges, but also the resilience and creativity in overcoming them. I've put all I've learned in a paper we're launching with DemocracyNext on the 21 November, hoping to encourage a conversation. Join us as we discuss these questions with Eva Bordos and Gazela Pudar Draško, moderated by Marko Prelec. Register here: https://lnkd.in/dH7qr6QQ

This week, I had the opportunity to attend the Democracy Alive Summit organised by European Movement International. The summit provided a vital platform to discuss the pressing challenges #journalism and information systems face today and the growing polarisation of European politics. With increasing populism pulling European politics to the extremes, journalism stands as an essential pillar for building sustainable resilience against #disinformation. In a powerful message, Věra Jourová, as she nears the end of her mandate, reminded us that trust is the core of our democracies: “We have a crisis of trust; it is a crisis of democracy.” Representing Re-Imagine Europa at this event brought me a renewed focus to the need for more optimistic information systems, underscoring the importance of safeguarding our emotions, values, and #narratives. Protecting these elements is key to strengthening our democracies and building a more unified future. #NODES #DemocracyAlive #TrustInDemocracy

In 2023, NIMD Ethiopia organized intergenerational dialogues between 50 politically active youth leaders and 23 senior leaders of major political parties. The participants discussed “Building a common vision on state–/nation-building in Ethiopia.” The dialogue brought people together from across generational, political and ethnic divides to discuss issues that are traditionally sources of tension, already demonstrating a certain degree of trust, and reducing the possibility for different political factions to influence the youth to become violent. Democracy thrives when we collaborate. Whether it’s civil society, media, tech, or educational institutions, working together is the key to safeguarding our democratic values. 🌍✨ Collaboration strengthens our ability to resist external threats and ensures that every voice is heard. By uniting across sectors, we can create a resilient democratic system, one that embraces inclusion, transparency, and collective action. Let’s build a future where democracy is protected through the power of partnership. #ThankYouDemocracy Global Democracy Coalition, International IDEA, The Youth Cafe, European Democracy Youth Network, World Liberty Congress, & Asia Centre

Happy International Day of Democracy! I believe that Civil society is fundamental to a thriving democracy. Participatory democracy isn’t just a complement to representative democracy—it’s a core part of it. In my manifesto, “Stand Up for Democracy / Speak Up for Europe”, I outline our responsibility at the European Economic and Social Committee to empower Civil Society voices across our Union. This commitment is crucial in shaping Europe’s democratic future and fostering trust in our institutions. In these challenging times, the EESC remains dedicated to being a platform for open, inclusive and meaningful democratic dialogue. Together, we can strengthen democracy in Europe, making it not only a guiding light for our citizens but also an inspiration for our neighbours and partners worldwide. As we move forward, I will consistently promote democracy, fundamental rights and the rule of law as guiding principles in all our activities. A shrinking space for civil society equates to a shrinking democracy—and we cannot let that happen. Let’s continue standing up for democracy, today and every day. Check out my manifesto: europa.eu/!nbHKrY #InternationalDayOfDemocracy
