Imagine #SMEs as bees 🐝: hardworking, agile, flexible, important for cross fertilisation in many ecosystems, driving transitions, ... Like bees, #SMEs need the right beehive, the right framework, to thrive and make European objectives reality on the ground. #SMEs play a significant role in creating economic wealth and societal cohesion. The European economy is mainly driven by SMEs. Policy makers on every occasion stress that SMEs are the “backbone of the economy”. However, we do not see the specificities of our SMEs considered in legislation. Decision makers should make policy and rules tailored to the capacities of small companies, as that will also work for larger companies. In the upcoming political mandate we have to make law deliver and build on “#ThinkSmallFirst and act accordingly”. I’m glad to see that the final report of the Strategic dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture recognises the central role of the #bioeconomy in combatting climate change, safeguarding ecosystem resilience, and delivering to restore nature. The report underlines the need of a more coordinated approach between the European Commission and EU Member States, the importance of engaging in a proficient dialogue with primary producers and the need to strengthen public private partnerships in developing the circular bioeconomy with the essential support of industry. Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is working exactly in this direction - with European Commission's directorates for Agriculture, Research and innovation and Industry, and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) - fostering the collaboration between industry and primary producers,  funding bioeconomy projects involving actors from several sectors, and coordinating activities with the CBE JU States Representatives Group. The presidency of Brazil at the #G20 in 2024 brings forth priority issues for the current Brazilian government, with the theme "Building a just world and a sustainable planet" including the fight against hunger, poverty and inequality; the three dimensions of sustainable development (i.e. economic, social and environmental dimensions); and the reform of global governance. The #MACS-G20 (Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists) event is the annual meeting of the top executives of G20 countries' agricultural research organizations under their respective ministries of Agriculture or similar bodies, for high-level discussions focused on research and development in the field of agriculture, in order to give global visibility to food security issues and promote joint actions internationally.

Being a member of the Global Shapers Community presents exciting opportunities to work on impactful initiatives. I have been actively engaged with the World Economic Forum’s working group on Technologies for Soil Health to address pressing agricultural challenges. Together, we developed a paper titled “Scaling Technology Adoption for Soil Health: A Focus on Africa.” This paper outlines five key recommendations that have the potential to significantly enhance food security, increase agricultural yield, and improve soil health. It explores collaborative opportunities and the adoption of existing solutions and technologies to revitalize soil health at scale. You can read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/d3NNmUKS

What an impactful 11th Annual Subcommittee Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (ASC)! Previously, I mentioned how SfL Co-Chair A.G. Kawamura spoke at UNEP's 11th ASC about the serious impact of invasive species. But the ASC highlights don’t stop there! Before sessions came to a close on Friday, A.G. and other Major Group (MG) representatives were fortunate enough to have a private meeting with newly elected UNEA-7 President Abdullah Bin Ali Amri. This discussion was another great example of building collaborative relations between Civil Society MG’s and UNEP leadership. During the meeting, A.G.'s remarks highlighted the broad impact of Farmers (agriculture and food) across various UN platforms. He emphasized that achieving the SDGs is only possible when agriculture, in all its different dimensions, is successful. He pledged that the Farmers MG would work collaboratively within the UNEP process to highlight exciting examples of solutions and breakthrough activities while tackling triple-threat challenges and realities. Additionally, A.G. provided closing remarks on behalf of the Farmers, NGO, Women, Local Authorities, Workers and Trade Unions, Science and Technology, Indigenous People, and Children and Youth Major Groups. In his closing speech, A.G. highlighted how the work done at ASC will shape the upcoming UNEA-7. He emphasized that UNEA-7 is a crucial opportunity to strengthen global environmental governance and tackle the planetary crisis head-on. A.G. stressed the importance of a holistic approach to environmental challenges, recognizing that climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and desertification are all interconnected issues. The Forum for the Future of Agriculture's Call to Action (CTA) is centred around seven commitments. Today we focus on another of our commitments. 🌿 CTA 3: Development and alignment of public funding market-based incentives for nature restoration and delivery of other eco-system services 🌿 As part of our Call to Action Commitment 3, the #ForumForAg is working to improve public and market-based incentives for #NatureRestoration and #EcosystemServices. In September 2023, we hosted a workshop with policymakers, finance experts, agri-food industry reps, academia, and NGOs to explore: -    Funding Needs: Understanding and unlocking finance for the transition. -    Opportunities: Current and new funding options, including EU reforms. -    Revenue Streams: Leveraging ecosystem service revenues to support farmers. Climate change presents a significant threat to humanity. It affects agriculture, food supply, and economic development. Urban agriculture (UA) is an alternate climate-smart approach to enhancing food and income security. The climate-smart agriculture (CSA) concept promises to lessen the effects of climate change. Nuanced research is critical to warrant food and income security. This review paper synthesises evidence through a systematic literature search to analyse the implications of CSA practices and climate adaptation strategies for food and income prospects. We also employed bibliometric analysis to show emerging trends and identify knowledge gaps in the ongoing topical discourse. The review elucidates insights into how CSA practices boost urban food production, accessibility, and dietary diversity, ultimately enhancing urban farmers’ food security. The economic benefits of CSA and climate adaptation strategies highlight that UA is vital for improving urban farmers’ income. Despite the opportunities created by UA, the review recognises the critical challenges and trade-offs that call for transforming UA to safeguard food and income security in the face of increasing climate change. The review calls for an all-round UA transformation encompassing urban community-based efforts, capacity building, and policy support mechanisms aimed at advancing climate-resilient UA and ensuring food and income security in an ever-changing environment.
