The HR Practice at Eton Bridge Partners Ltd kicked off the festive season last night with our annual event at the amazing La Fromagerie, Marylebone. A year ago, I attend the event just a few weeks into the business, slightly overwhelmed by being the new kid on block, not to mention the aroma of cheese, the cheesy jokes and small-talk, particularly when I was still getting my head round the job. I’m not embarrassed to say that last year, when I got back to my local train station and picked up my car after the event, I sat in my car and had a good cry. Not because I was unhappy, but because as a neurodiverse person, these events are overwhelmingly stimulating, and sometimes, this is the only way to release all the built up sensory overload. A year on, I’m pleased to say, it was a little less intimidating and I didn’t cry - although I am still learning the job and trying to figure out how I do it in a sustainable way that works with my neurodiverse brain. Part of the difference was the fact that this year, I was able to invite some of my own network of contacts that I have started to build over the past year. And in building the relationships with these incredible HR leaders, we have got to know each other on a more personal level, and with the growing trust between us, I have been able to ‘unmask’ a little more. I didn’t have to worry as much if I was clumsy or awkward in my small-talk, or if I felt like 'Dory from Finding Nemo' by forgetting what someone said only 2 minutes before. I am very grateful that the team at Eton Bridge Partners have given me the support, space and time to figure things out, and have respected my needs when I’ve left ‘earlier’ in the evening or I’ve needed to do something completely different. Our workplaces are FULL of people that are different, and who have different needs, neurodiverse or not. I hope that by openly sharing my experiences, we can continue to create genuinely inclusive workplaces that can be flexible and accommodating to all types of people. The shops are in their sequin era - that can only mean one thing, party season is upon us! A perfect time to perhaps pop a little focus onto the event that can make even the bravest HR professional amongst us shudder, just a little! The works Christmas Party! Spare a thought for your HR colleagues who pick up the pieces when things don’t go quite as they should. In my years in HR, I’ve experienced pretty much all there is to, from the embarrassing hiccup to the cringeworthy moments of ‘I can’t believe I’m dealing with this!’. What is it that brings out the daftness at these parties?? How can you host a festive gathering that everyone enjoys without the post-party HR headaches? Here’s my top tips on how to keep things merry and bright (and stress-free for your HR team): ✅ One Size Does Not Fit All – A traditional party isn’t for everyone, so consider alternatives like a team lunch, virtual game night, or volunteer day to keep things inclusive and accessible. ✅ Flexibility is Key – Keep attendance optional and relaxed to avoid pressure, which can lead to discomfort, misunderstandings, and even post-party drama. ✅ Keep Costs (and Drama) Low – A thoughtful, low-cost celebration can show appreciation without overloading budgets or creating stressful aftermath for HR.
