A thought provoking Sunday on the future of plastics and alternatives. This is a damaging research report, released by the The Center for Climate Integrity and shared by Grist and Corporate Knights. Petrochemical companies, who have developed our plastics industry, have known for decades that the plastic recycling industry won't work at scale, yet promoted it and their plastics at the same time. Surprised? Of course not. Why? Because we live first hand as consumers with how people struggle with plastic waste and recycling programs - 80 garbage truck loads of plastic enter the ocean each HOUR. Why? Because plastics will drive half the growth in the global oil industry through to 2050. These are for profit ventures and our system demands they seek growth and profitability. Ethical or moral? You be the judge, but our own opinions won't change their strategies and approaches - competition and consumer behaviour will. As a leader in impact innovation, I believe it's our both our responsibility and our opportunity to fuel non-plastics packaging and film innovation that will create a tipping point for alternative solutions by incredible founders and supported by the right funders. These could be in areas including: cardboard, glass, seaweed, mushroom, corn starch, and more. It can be the development of core materials (such as Bioform Technologies or SUPAC Innovation Corp.), or it can be those who develop end products like EQUO Co.. If we can make it viable and easier for businesses that need the packaging, and for the consumers who use it, we can create the tipping point in demand (and resulting impact on revenue and profit). Yes, regulations and lawsuits contribute - but unless you ban plastic (highly unlikely in today's political climate and not pragmatic in the short term), then innovation and where we deploy our investment dollars will lead the change even as plastic innovation did 60-70 years ago. Remember, we've lived with plastic for less than 100 years - we can live without it but we need to fuel new innovation to make the shift. Let's do this. #impact #impactinvesting #plasticwaste #circulareconomy #packaginginnovation #biodegradablepackaging #angelinvesting #venturecapital #techforgood #businessforgood https://lnkd.in/gdvPaBsQ

🧠 Industry Giants, Next-Gen Plastics, and the Missing Piece: Your Take? 🧠 The plastics processing and recycling sector is buzzing, and Hillenbrand is at the center of it. They've been making moves—from partnering with The Coca-Cola Company to hosting their Circular Plastics Challenge to highlighting sustainable innovations at #NPE2024, the largest plastics trade show in the Americas. But there's something intriguing here—a gap that’s just waiting to be filled. If you’ve been keeping an eye on Hillenbrand and its competitors, you know they’re evolving rapidly with new technologies in circularity and sustainability. But here’s the twist: where’s the conversation on bioplastics or closed-loop recycling systems? And why aren’t we seeing collaborations with emerging players in renewable materials like Array Technologies or Oil-Dri Corporation of America? Imagine the impact of these companies pooling their expertise. What do you think, Kimberly and Bhavik? Is it time to bring together forces like Matthews International and Daktronics to create the ultimate sustainability play in plastics? Your insights could be the key to driving the next innovation wave. Who else in this space needs to join this conversation? Let’s make this bigger than an idea—it could reshape the future of plastics and recycling! 🌍♻️ #SustainabilityInPlastics #InnovationCollaboration #PlasticsRevolution #Hillenbrand
