WeAreCohere just released an essential guide for International NGOs, U.N. actors and donors supporting #refugees. The guide explores five interconnected pathways crucial for achieving Meaningful Refugee Participation. Our Refugees initiative contributed their insights on STEP 4: direct, high-quality and equitable funding for refugee-led organizations: https://lnkd.in/durDRHks This report is a companion to a five-part virtual Interactive Workshop Series, providing actionable pathways from refugee leaders and experts to help refugee response organizations improve their practices. The series features ANA MARIA DIEZ, President of Coalition for Venezuela, who highlights the value of refugee leadership: "it is the right thing and the most practical way to achieve good results in less time, since there is nothing to supplant lived experience"

What if the most effective solutions to refugee crises came from the refugees themselves? #Refugee-led organizations have the unique advantage of being part of the communities they serve, and we've learned their expertise runs even deeper. ➡ Refugee responses, including policies and programs, are more effective when informed by refugees' real needs and lived experiences. ➡ Refugee leaders are doing some of the most effective work on the front lines of crises. ➡ Refugee voices are crucial for sustainable solutions and integration into host communities. Without them, we risk continuing short-sighted responses that only address immediate needs. 🚀 Great news! The YMCA Europe Refugee Skilling and Support Project has been extended for Phase III through the end of the year. Since October 2022, through this project, YMCAs in Europe have been actively working to serve the Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) with the support of the Accenture Foundation. ➡️ The first phase was the emergency response, implemented until March 2023 ➡️ The second phase began in June 2023, ran through the end of May, and transitioned from an emergency response to integration-focused 👉 Read more about the impact of the first two phases and what happens in the next phase here: https://bit.ly/3VuXbss

📢 New Report Alert! 📢 We are thrilled to announce the launch of WeAreCohere report “Five Organisational Pathways for Enabling Meaningful Refugee Participation: A Step-by-Step Implementation Guide” endorsed by us. As organisations committed to practically enabling Meaningful Refugee Participation at scale, APNOR participated in a five-part virtual Interactive Workshop Series (IWS), titled 'Building Organisational Pathways towards Meaningful Participation and Refugee Leadership’. The series, conducted between October 2023 and April 2024, delved into various aspects of internal changes refugee response organisations must undertake to enable Meaningful Refugee Participation. This report is a companion to the IWS recordings, which are available on Cohere’s YouTube channel. The report documents tested and actionable pathways shared by experts, and provides refugee response organisations with concrete steps to improve their practices. Each pathway corresponds to one of the IWS sessions, covering topics such as Equity Learning Journeys, Recruiting and Hiring People of Forced Displacement, Equitable Partnerships, High-quality and Equitable Funding for RLOs, and Localised Refugee-led Advocacy. When implemented together, these pathways enable actors to genuinely promote Meaningful Refugee Participation, moving beyond rhetoric. This paper is primarily intended for international organisations, individuals working within these organisations, and donors, that aim to support people experiencing forced displacement residing in other countries. Local civil society organisations and RLOs may also find relevant insights. APNOR endorses this report and will use it as a roadmap for future engagements to promote Meaningful Refugee Participation. We hope this report provides you with clear guidance on your next internal steps towards achieving this goal #MeaningfulRefugeeParticipation #MRP #Refugees #Advocacy

👇 NEW REPORT ON MEANINGFUL PARTICIPATION! 👇 When WeAreCohere, Julia Zahreddine, and I started out on this initiative, we hypothesized that lots of people wanted to be a part of this sector-wide commitment to meaningful refugee participation, but lacked the practical know-how. We further hypothesized (because some of us have lived this experience) that the pressure to just "get it" and "do it" immediately, without really understanding the nuances and intricacies of enabling equity, is real. So we sought to create an interactive workshop series that would hold a safe, supportive, and educational tone where we can all learn and grow together. The Cohere Interactive Workshop Series [https://lnkd.in/gJZk2W2r] confirmed our hypothesis -- we are damn confused! Julia and I wrote the new report [https://lnkd.in/gjsaXgXP] to help create clarity, and to chart the pathway forward based on the guidance of many contributing experts. To Emmy Fu, Hane AL Rustm, Deepa Nambiar, Mohammad Baqir B., Najeeba Wazefadost, Barri Shorey, Hafsar Tameesuddin, Mahrukh ماہ رخ माह रुख़ Hasan حسن हसन, Miles T., Samara Hakim (she/her), Hourie Tafech, PhD, Ishimwe Jean Marie, Chris Eades, ANA MARIA DIEZ, Adior Ibrahim, Mozhgan Morefizadeh, and Lublanc Prieto -- thank you for your wisdom and clarity. I'll be sharing takeaways from this process over the next couple of weeks here, but I wanted to start with the biggest: There are things we all can do ✨ right now ✨ to move the needle on meaningful participation. We shouldn't do these things just because they are the right thing to do, but also because the work will be wildly more successful for communities. If you have push back to any of the ✨ right now ✨ actions in your organization, consider embarking on an equity learning journey. I'm tagging some of the best equity trainers I know -- the kind that don't just teach the norms, but also that help operationalize the norms. As adults we sometimes forget it's good to be vulnerable, to admit we don't know, to seek guidance. This initiative taught me that the well-established refugee response sector needs to admit ❇ we don't know how to do this yet ❇ , start listening way, way, way, way more, and then to work together to create clarity on where we need to go systemically from here. Spoiler alert: An overhaul of the humanitarian system is coming, and I'm (cautiously, carefully, and compassionately) here for it. I signed up to help people. If you're a part of the well-established humanitarian system, I think you did too. So we gotta be like water and flow into new ways of being to realize that commitment. Get ready for important changes with help: Samara Hakim (she/her) Amadeo Cruz Guiao Ayda Z. and Molly Cohen Mohammad Baqir B. Deepa Nambiar Mahrukh ماہ رخ माह रुख़ Hasan حسن हसन Elena Gillis Isabella Jean Who else? Share your resources in comments. More to come on takeaways, but until then... READ THE REPORT! 👇

I’m going to get a little more granular about WeAreCohere's new report on Meaningful Participation, starting w/ session two on recruitment, hiring and onboarding of people of forced displacement: https://lnkd.in/gc8wYVKK If/when seeking to increase staffing with lived experience of forced displacement within your well-established refugee response organization, expert contributors recommend that you start with: 1️⃣ Reassess your approach to risk management and legal compliance. We need to get creative about how we can hire people; accepting 0% risk will not lead us toward meaningful participation. Get legal advice from people who want to see refugee community members employed. (PILnet and Jasmine Simperingham probably have thoughts and guidance on this!) Also, find local legal help too from civil society allies who embrace innovative legal solutions. 2️⃣ Recruit relationally and in collaboration with communities you’re working with so that human resources teams can gain new relationships with otherwise obscured talent pools. Your DevEx job board post & LinkedIn announcement isn't going to reveal community leadership on its own! 3️⃣ Operationalize workplace inclusion through efforts like mentorship and professional development programs, well-drafted and promulgated policies, inclusive budgeting practices, cultural intelligence training and more. Get HR, Ops, and Finance teams INVOLVED in meaningful participation. Recruiting and hiring is only half of the journey. Creating the foundation for anyone to succeed within our workplaces is equally important. Adior Ibrahim offered tons of advice around this. These actions and many more are unpacked in the report. 👇 And, thanks, Humanitarian Policy Group for sharing! #refugeeslead #meaningfulparticipation #localization #localisation #decolonization #decolonisation #representation #deib

#WorldHumanitarianDay ☑ Today we remember the many humanitarian workers who are helping people around the world. ☑ And we think of those who have lost their own lives in these life-saving missions. ☑ The entire UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe team works with great respect with the more than 20,000 UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency colleagues. Their work on the ground has a direct impact on people and it's #helpwithcertaincy ☑ Just like our colleague Sebastian Herwig, who tells us what motivates him every day to work for people who need our support. ☑ More information in the current UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe press release in the comments. #hilftsicher

The 2023 Global Refugee Forum (GRF) outcomes report published by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency while commendable in its ambition, leaves us with lingering questions. As we unpack the numbers, we must remember that true impact lies beyond mere statistics. The GRF’s success hinges not only on quantitative achievements but also on the qualitative transformation it brings to the lives of those it aims to serve. Refugees must be meaningfully engaged and their voices, often silenced by trauma, and bureaucracy must be amplified. Only then can the GRF truly transform statistics into impactful change for displaced individuals worldwide. Read more: 🔗https://ow.ly/YLxc50RN8as #RefugeesLead #2023GRF #InclusionOrIllusion
