Exciting Update on Hospital Care at Home!
Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released its report to Congress on the Acute Hospital Care at Home (AHCaH) waiver initiative, providing valuable insights from 11,907 unique patients. Here are some key takeaways:
- Improved Outcomes: Patients receiving care at home experienced lower mortality rates and fewer discharges to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs).
- High Satisfaction: Both patients and caregivers reported high levels of satisfaction with the care provided under this initiative. In fact, "patients and caregivers generally view care provided through the AHCAH initiative as safe, effective, and a positive experience."
However, the report also highlights disparities, indicating that AHCaH patients tend to be predominantly white, urban residents, and less likely to receive Medicaid. This underscores the need for expanded Medicaid coverage for HaH services in many areas. Additionally, the report states that hospital-at-home care does not increase—and may even reduce—Medicare spending.
This report reinforces what we know: hospital-at-home models are transforming care by delivering high-quality treatment in the comfort of patients' homes. We remain optimistic that Congress will carefully consider these findings and vote to extend the AHCaH waiver for another five years.
Stay tuned for our deeper analysis of the report!
