Many thanks to Minister for Further and Higher Education Vikki Howells MS and Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership Jack Sargeant MS for joining us at our roundtable on putting the learner at the heart of the system today at Welsh Labour conference. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 I said in my contribution that the fact that The Open University in Wales and ColegauCymru | CollegesWales organised the roundtable jointly, and included Deio Owen from NUS Wales, is a sign of the commitment of each of us to genuine partnership for the benefit of learners and students. 🤝 I also set out three key things that need to be built into our new system: 1️⃣ Flexibility: we know learners want more of it. We need our funding system to shift away from being one which makes the 3-year full-time degree the pinnacle of our education system, and instead become one which enables learners to flex their studies up and down to suit their lives, across modes and providers. 2️⃣ Partnership: we all need to work together to provide new and different types of learning opportunities. But we also need to make sure that any funding to support this doesn’t lead to learning and teaching funding being stripped away. 3️⃣ Lifelong learning: we need to become a genuine second chance nation. Doing that requires, among other things, building portability and credit transfer into our system, and ensuring clear and coherent pathways both horizontally and vertically for learners. Great to have worked with Rachel Cable, Clare Williams and Dave Hagendyk and to have had such great contributions from participants. 👏

Today I'm thinking a lot about the future of education and the priorities we must sustain as the federal government's role will likely change dramatically under the new administration and could shift oversight from the federal government to states. - We must define quality in our educational system and work methodically to ensure quality across all schools and communities. - We must empower educators and leaders to create and sustain improvements from their seat. - We must build sustainable systems that produce quality outcomes at scale that are not influenced by politics. The success of future generations depends on how we work now to improve education, and i'm not shying away from the monumental task ahead.

Does education in our country needs reformation ? Well while most of us may agree to it, Sir Ken Robinson has an interesting and insightful thought on it . The fact is that given the challenges we face, education doesn't need to be reformed -- it needs to be transformed. The key to this transformation is not to standardize education, but to personalize it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child, to put students in an environment where they want to learn and where they can naturally discover their true passions.
