We are thrilled to announce that our team (PI: Ayat Al Assi; co-PIs: Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Carol Friedland, Md Adilur Rahim, Kevin T. Smiley) has been awarded a grant from The RESTORE Act Center of Excellence for Louisiana! This project aims to incorporate wind risk assessment and risk reduction through advanced building code practices into the Louisiana Coastal Master Plan. Our initiative will explore how social equity factors impact individuals' direct economic experiences from wind events. Moreover, we will assess the effectiveness of enhanced building code practices in reducing wind risk. Our goal is ambitious: to create a comprehensive library of wind-risk metrics to support resilience efforts in Coastal Louisiana. This research isn't just about understanding the dynamics of wind—it's about making a lasting impact on our communities through informed, equitable policy-making. Stay tuned as we embark on this crucial journey to fortify resilience and protect our communities from the increasing threats of wind-related natural disasters. Please join us in congratulating our postdoctoral researcher Dr. Ayat Al Assi for receiving a grant from The RESTORE Act Center of Excellence for Louisiana. Dr. Al Assi's work will focus how various social equity factors influence individuals' direct experience of economic impacts from wind events, while also evaluating the effectiveness of enhanced building code practices in reducing wind risk. In doing so, it will establish a comprehensive library for wind-risk metrics, both before and after fortifying resilience efforts in Coastal Louisiana. Conservationists from the Global South face so many challenges! Here is a video talking about it with some participants of our workshop about this in Mombasa, Kenya.
🪸What is most challenging about doing coral research and restoration?🪸 Some issues frequently arise regardless of researchers' origins, while others are site-specific and depend on local factors. We asked a group of coral scientists from the Global South about the biggest challenges they face in studying corals and working on coral conservation and restoration. Watch the video to find out! Challenges persist in the Global South's efforts to cultivate and retain skilled researchers, access funding and data, and develop the technical tools and capacity necessary to scale up coral conservation and restoration efforts. Relying on the Global North for solutions perpetuates a cycle of dependency and overlooks context-specific approaches to problem-solving. Are you involved in coral research, conservation, or restoration? Let us know in the comments below the biggest challenge of your work! Our biennial request for 2026-2028 research proposals is now open to submissions! Maine Sea Grant invites proposals for one- to two-year research projects from investigators throughout the state of Maine. Collaborations with tribal, state and regional agencies, municipalities, local organizations, industry, and other research and education institutions are encouraged. All proposals must clearly identify how the proposed research applies to one (or more) of the strategic goals and objectives (stated as actions in the Strategic Plan) and cross-cutting principles. Maine Sea Grant seeks to foster the highest quality marine research with a strong likelihood of societal impact in Maine. Investigators will be evaluated on how well they explicitly describe how understanding, tools, and data products generated in their projects will lead to measurable progress toward these goals and actions. The deadline for Letters of Intent is February 4, 2025 by 11:59 PM EST. Full proposal deadline is May 15, 2025, by 11:59 PM.
