The sighting for this house was quite unfun to workout. It's at the entrance to a new development high up on a hill. Looking at the sort of entrance progression that everybody in the neighborhood's going to take as they come in. We wanted to sort of address that. Even though we're in rural setting or what you might call an exurb, the owners and I felt it was important to kind of address the entrance. So we started with Bay window for the owner's office sort of facing down the street, but then we wanted to give some privacy to the front door. The home so that the front door wasn't getting all the headlights on it and staring right at everybody in the neighborhood. O we rotated the house 90�� to get that office facing the entrance. And then we have a more private driveway. And then the front door faces what might have been the side yard. So people entering the home come up, they see the house and then they turn in and see voila, the front door. Then we also wanted to make sure that the garage wasn't super prominent, so we broke down the massing. It's a three car garage. That there is a large roof over the two car and a low roof over the third car. And then we place the doors on the backside that you have to drive all the way around the house to get to the garage doors. We then wanted to have a nice way for the family to enter the home from that side. So we provided sort of another front door, we'll call it the junior front door with its own little Stew, nice covering on it. And it gives direct access to the mud room, to all the storage, to another office and then to the pantry in the kitchen. And then. Finally, the backyard faces the most private part of the property, looking down over about another 2 acres of forest and wetlands. Planning is the most important and often the very first step of what we do as architect. It's not always as simple as just throwing a floor plan together and popping it on the lot. We evaluate how the house interacts with the grade, with the sun, with other houses nearby, with the street, and with everything else that surrounds the home. This Lake Winnipesaukee retreat was designed for a longtime client of Battle Architects. The home’s long, narrow layout was specifically crafted to maximize the stunning water views from every angle. Our client often mentioned he had numerous ideas, and it was our task to identify the best ones. Upon completion, he declared, “It is perfect! Works have commenced on site for a full refurbishment as well as ground, first and second floor extensions to a mid-terrace home in Stoke Newington. A host of issues discovered during the design and exploration stages meant that works have ended being more structurally rigorous than initially planned and a lot of the design decisions have been dictated by the site conditions. In this project more than most form follows function and a structural reason is present behind every design move or material. Color and design is just as important as spacing to architecture, you can easily build a visual connection with a dominant focal point in a landscape. In cities overcrowded with buildings, an architect might feel limited with options to maintain a building or develop an new design, that's when color can become the most important element that can highlight a building and transforms a building to a landmark. #design #architecture #color #cities #solutions
