Today, at COP29 Azerbaijan, the Industrial Transition Accelerator has issued an open letter urging governments to use proven policy measures to stimulate demand for green products and better seize the potential of industrial decarbonisation. The letter has been endorsed by global business leaders and a network of more than 700 financial institutions. New Mission Possible Partnership data shows that out of an estimated 700 projects needed by 2030, only 136 have made it past Final Investment Decision. The primary roadblock? Uncertainty over the demand for low-and near-zero-carbon materials, chemicals, and fuels. Government policies must be strengthened to stimulate demand and support the supply of these clean technologies. The ITA is calling for key policy measures, including: 🔹 Implementing and strengthening global fuel standards and carbon pricing mechanisms. 🔹 Setting and enforcing mandatory quotas for clean hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). 🔹 Establishing lead markets for low- and near-zero-carbon materials with effective carbon pricing. 🔹 Mandating targets for low- and near-zero-carbon materials in public procurement. 🔹 Supporting downstream sectors with subsidies to bridge the price gap for green commodities. 📝 Take action now! Place-based green industrial strategies can be very powerful. Australia has the opportunity to be a leader in this space with the deployment of renewable energy and new technologies, including some which are already mature. The kinds of measures in this call from the Industrial Transition Accelerator are essential, as they give confidence to would-be investors that a market will exist for low-carbon products.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔 Industry accounts for 20% of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions, only behind transportation and energy supply. However, industrial decarbonization faces significant technical challenges that could favor the fossil-fuel powered status quo. A new report by La Fabrique de l'industrie and McKinsey & Company finds that electrification is the key decarbonization pathway for industrial activities. To promote electrification efforts at the industry level, a higher price on carbon emissions is needed, guaranteeing that industrial decarbonization is more economically attractive. Broadening the scope of the EU emissions trading system (#EUETS) and of the carbon border adjustment mechanism (#CBAM), which guarantees a level playing field for a handful of goods imported into the EU that are subject to the EU ETS, is a key step to achieve this. Moreover, EU countries should promote long-term pricing contracts that stabilize renewable and low-carbon electricity prices for industrial consumers. Such contract are now more accessible thanks to the latest reform of the EU electricity market design.
