Happy World Standards Day 🎂📏 Today, we honour the importance of standards which play an important role, by increasing the quality, safety and compatibility of products and services. Under IEEE Standards Association (SA), several standards are developed. At ITCC, we would like to especially highlight a new standard proposal, approved by IEEE SA in 2024, which has garnered significant interest: P7100 - Standard for Measurement of Environmental Impacts of Artificial Intelligence Systems. This standard aims to establish a much-needed measurement framework to report on the environmental impacts of AI. P7100 Standard: https://lnkd.in/ej7fx_Xw

“Regulation or Innovation? UK Unlocks The Power of AI” 💡 Our Tech Policy Lead, Shahd Asfour delivered an analytical review on the regulation of #AI within the #UK alongside distinguished speakers from the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology IL | משרד החדשנות, המדע והטכנולוגיה as well as experts from the Technology and Science community. This session provided a comprehensive overview of the regulatory frameworks for AI in Israel, the US, Canada, and the UK. In her presentation, Shahd explained the UK’s strategic approach to managing this pivotal and burgeoning technology. She highlighted how the #UK adeptly maintains a balance between #empowering regulators and providing sufficient autonomy for innovators to develop new technologies, thereby fostering economic growth. For further details regarding the event, please refer to the following link https://lnkd.in/dKz7ev5b. UK is a global leader in #AI and hosted the first ever global #AISafetySummit last November 2023 at Bletchley Park, the birthplace of modern computing. It succeeded to drive international collaboration to mitigate the most serious risks – risks to life – at the frontier of AI. This is necessary to allow the transformational benefits of AI to be realised, while managing the most serious risks and maintaining public support. The next #AISafetySummit will take place in South Korea and will be Co-Hosted by both the #UK and SK. For further details, check the link: https://lnkd.in/dW5_Tt-Z Moreover, through the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, led by Rt Hon Secretary of State, Michelle Donelan MP, the UK established robust collaborative ties with Israel in the realms of Science and Technology. This partnership is facilitated by dedicated teams from both ends. 🤝Honored to have participated in the "Investigating Digital Sovereignty: Theories, Methods, and Empirical Challenges" workshop held on 14-15 November 2024 at the #UniversityofSalerno as part of the (ICPC) Internet & Communication Policy Center. 🌐It was inspiring to connect with leading experts and researchers, sharing perspectives on digital sovereignty—a crucial issue in today's interconnected world. 🔍My research focused on the concept of digital sovereignty within the microprocessor value chain, exploring the role of technology in redefining global power structures. 🌱Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a dynamic exchange of ideas, which highlighted the urgency of addressing digital sovereignty in our current geopolitical landscape. #DigitalSovereignty #Research #microprocessor #valuechain #InternetGovernance

In a nutshell (Q1, Q2), it is called double standards at the macro level and affinity bias at the micro level. Q1: "Tony Jin Yong, Huawei’s vice-president for Europe, said he was puzzled by measures to form 'exclusive groups' among 'like-minded countries', without specifying those countries and groups." Q2: "'We are very confused, as this approach limits cooperation by focusing on the country of origin [of tech companies],' Jin said on Wednesday at an event on global AI governance and China-Europe cooperation at the state-backed Centre for China and Globalisation in Beijing." https://lnkd.in/gYKED9fp

🚨 Our latest policy brief, "China's Tech Surveillance Applications in Europe & Latin America: Analysing the Impact on Democratic Governance," is now available. 📊 In collaboration with Carlos Saura, this report explores the integration of Chinese AI and machine learning technologies into social surveillance across Europe and Latin America. The report examines four case studies—two from Europe and two from Latin America—highlighting these surveillance technologies' widespread use and impact on democratic governance. We discuss these technologies' challenges and provide recommendations for policymakers, civil society organizations, government officials, and researchers to address their implications. Published by the School of Transnational Governance, this policy brief would interest those interested in technology, surveillance, and democracy. 🔗 Available here: https://lnkd.in/dHdfW3FQ

In 2023, only 37% of people in low-income countries used the Internet. Bandwidth in the least developed countries (#LDCs) was just 20% of the global average. Global cooperation is key to ensuring AI & the digital revolution won’t leave developing countries behind. Our joint efforts continue at the 27th UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (#CSTD) & beyond. https://ow.ly/nnhL50Rh8zk
