Is being ignored by the global AI giants such a bad thing? I argued at the UN last week that there are benefits to the fact that AI platforms have so far failed to train their bots and LLMs on African languages and data. The 'lag' offers us a small window of opportunity to secure our IP, to avoid the kinds of copyright battles we're seeing in the US + EU. If we're savvy, we can negotiate a more equitable data economy in the Majority World. I also called on the UN Information Committee to help secure access to 'compute' resources/systems for African researchers, so we can leap-frog the need to build multi-billion dollar hardware platforms & instead invest our funds into people/skills. Here's the video of our UN Information Committee session, with responses from UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming, and UN representatives from Canada, Costa Rica & Latvia: https://bit.ly/4agOPdl

At EU Supervisory Digital Finance Academy, we’ve gained valuable insights from Giulia Schneider on the AI Act’s impact on financial markets, and we’re excited to share key takeaways. One important lesson is that the AI Act’s effects go beyond high-risk use cases like credit scoring and insurance risk assessment in life and health. It also highlights broader requirements, such as promoting AI literacy among deployers and providers, and addressing General Purpose AI Models.

Thought-provoking panel 'Artificial secrecy in the digital state', chaired by Marco Almada with presentations from Deirdre Curtin Madalina Busuioc Lisa Van Dongen Kristina Irion and myself. The conclusion is univocal: public administrations are characterised by a significant level of secrecy, which the #AIAct will not change. While transparency should be the rule and secrecy the exception, institutional considerations are pushing the status quo toward less visibility and less democratic oversight. In light of the many scandals of AI in public administration, this status quo is increasingly less sustainable!

🚨 Our latest policy brief, "China's Tech Surveillance Applications in Europe & Latin America: Analysing the Impact on Democratic Governance," is now available. 📊 In collaboration with Carlos Saura, this report explores the integration of Chinese AI and machine learning technologies into social surveillance across Europe and Latin America. The report examines four case studies—two from Europe and two from Latin America—highlighting these surveillance technologies' widespread use and impact on democratic governance. We discuss these technologies' challenges and provide recommendations for policymakers, civil society organizations, government officials, and researchers to address their implications. Published by the School of Transnational Governance, this policy brief would interest those interested in technology, surveillance, and democracy. 🔗 Available here: https://lnkd.in/dHdfW3FQ
