Meriel Tulante (Jefferson University) and myself are accepting proposals for our session at the 55th Annual NeMLA Convention, March 6-9, 2025, Philadelphia: REPRESENTING THE PAST: ITALIAN LITERATURE AND FILM BETWEEN HISTORY AND MEMORY. This session explores the many representations of the past that have occurred in literature and film within the strongly historicist foundations of Italian culture. These representations are rarely nostalgic, more often representing the urgency of remembering the past as pointing directly to the contradictions of the present. Whether by providing unexpected and at times disturbing renditions of a forgotten past (from Alessandro Manzoni to Sebastiano Vassalli ) or by soliciting reactions, or even indicting the readers, concerning more recent events (from Giorgio Bassani and Elsa Morante to Francesco Pecoraro and Edoardo Albinati), Italian literary and filmed fiction has always tried "to seize hold of a memory as it flashes up at a moment of danger," to quote Walter Benjamin. The panel therefore solicits papers that address the historical and retrospective gaze of Italian literature and film from a range of theoretical perspectives. For any information, please write to either Meriel.Tulante@jefferson.edu or to malaguti@umass.edu To submit a proposal: https://lnkd.in/e2P5EemG

I would like to share a book that I really like In "The Sorrows of Young Werther," Goethe presents a timeless story of unrequited love and emotional turmoil. The novel, written in the form of letters, follows the life of the passionate and sensitive young artist Werther, who becomes infatuated with Charlotte, a beautiful and kind-hearted woman. Despite knowing she is betrothed to another man, Werther's love for her grows into an all-consuming obsession, leading to devastating consequences. Goethe's poignant exploration of youthful idealism, the pangs of love, and the struggle between emotion and reason has captivated readers since its first publication in 1774. This literary masterpiece is a profound reflection on the nature of human emotion and the often-painful journey of self-discovery.

When Carsten Hjort Lange and I launched the international book series Historiography of Rome and Its Empire (HRE) in 2016, we hardly expected to be able to announce today that volume 20 will soon be published: Michael Hanaghan's excellent book on ‘Future Knowledge and Imperial Acceptance in Late Antique Historiography and Epideixis from Constantine to Honorius’. This calls for a celebration. We would like to thank all our outstanding authors, our board members, and, of course, Brill, Mirjam Elbers, Senior Acquisitions Editor for Classical Studies, and Giulia Moriconi, Associate Editor for Classical Studies. Soon to follow is another splendid volume, Virginia Fabrizi’s ‘The City and the World. Narrative and Roman Space in Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita.’ Michael Hanaghan, Australian Catholic University (ACU), https://lnkd.in/dM8iZ36g Virginia Fabrizi, university of naples l'orientale, https://lnkd.in/deCCektF https://lnkd.in/dywrta4S

The importance of storytelling. A powerful tool.
Orhan Pamuk on the importance of storytelling. The best-selling Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature. He has devoted his life to the study of mixture and plurality, and "in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures."
