July has been designated National Blueberry Month in the US since 1974, celebrating the benefits of this superfood. While enjoying summer fruits, remember to wash them under running water to remove most pesticides. According to the National Pesticide Information Center, although 'no washing method is 100% effective for removing all pesticide residues', cleaning fruits and vegetables before eating will help reduce pesticide levels. For the second year in a row, blueberries are 11th on EWG's 2024 Dirty Dozen produce list. UK: The amount of pesticide residue allowed on scores of food types in England, Wales and Scotland has soared since Brexit, analysis reveals, with some now thousands of times higher. Changes to regulations in Great Britain mean more than 100 items are now allowed to carry more pesticides when sold to the public, ranging from potatoes to onions, grapes to avocados, and coffee to rice. For tea, the maximum residue level (MRL) was increased by 4,000 times for both the insecticide chlorantraniliprole and the fungicide boscalid. For the controversial weedkiller glyphosate, classed as a “probable human carcinogen” by the World Health Organization (WHO), the MRL for beans was raised by 7.5 times. More people exposed to more toxins for longer periods of time. #emergingissues #insurance #underwriting #insuranceindustry #reinsurance https://lnkd.in/guvfmaMC

Ever wonder what's lurking on your apple skin?🍎🍏 Pesticides are essential for protecting crops, but who wants a side of chemicals with their fruit? This study shows how a technique called SERS (think fingerprint for molecules!) can quickly and easily detect pesticide residue on apple skin, even in tiny amounts. That means safer apples for you and less mystery about what you're eating. So next time you grab an apple, you can rest assured knowing science is on your side, keeping it pesticide-free (or at least within safe limits). Learn more about keeping your apples safer! For the first time in 40 years, the US EPA has taken emergency action to stop the use of the pesticide Dacthal (DCPA) due to its irreversible damage to unborn babies. Dacthal is a common pesticide used on crops such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and onions. It is so dangerous that it "needs to be removed from the market immediately", according to the EPA's statement on Aug 6th. To support the analysis of this banned pesticide, LGC Standards offer around 20 reference materials and research chemicals in neat and solution form, including ISO 17034-accredited mixtures. My latest Cotton Horizon's column reviews recent reports from the International Cotton Advisory Committee on cotton and pesticide use. New data is welcome. The problem is, the reports are "part data, part deflection". If ICAC are right that cotton needs to have better policies, it needs us to challenge pesticide use in cotton, not compare it to soybeans or grapes. In this case, in vino is not veritas. https://lnkd.in/gRZudCpq
