The catastrophic floods in Maiduguri, Nigeria's northeastern city, have unleashed a secondary crisis - exploitation by canoe owners. Initially volunteering to help, some canoe owners now demand hefty fees, leaving vulnerable residents struggling to access basic necessities. Falmata Muhammed, a 48-year-old mother, was charged 80,000 naira ($49.56) for a short trip, highlighting the desperation and greed plaguing the city. Despite efforts by the Nigerian government, international organizations, and local communities to provide aid, the exploitation undermines relief efforts. With thousands displaced and significant damage reported, authorities must intervene to protect residents from predatory practices and ensure assistance reaches those most in need. In line with the warning issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), predicting five days of heavy rainfall and flooding, Northeast Nigeria has been ravaged by its most severe flood disaster. This catastrophic event has displaced thousands, with Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, being the hardest hit. According to the National Emergency Management Agency, 70% of Maiduguri has been submerged by fast-moving waters. The flood has also led to a jailbreak at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility, with three inmates recaptured so far. Additionally, the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo has lost 80% of its animal population due to the flood. Unfortunately, the flood's impact is not limited to Borno State, as neighboring Zamfara and Yobe states have also been affected. In light of the ongoing flood disaster, Bulwark Intelligence emphasizes the importance of safety during this critical period. Our expertise includes situational reports and alerts to keep you informed on flood updates and warnings, as well as route assessments to ensure your safety on the road. 🌧️ Maiduguri Flood: A Setback to Recovery For over a decade, Borno State, Nigeria has been gripped by conflict, with recent progress offering hope for peace. The closure of camps and relocation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) signaled a path forward. But on 10th September 2024, devastating floods hit Maiduguri, affecting over 230,000 people in a single day, reversing much of the hard-won progress. As a humanitarian worker, I fear the ripple effects: disease outbreaks, protection issues, GBV, malnutrition, and deaths. Now more than ever, immediate action is needed to prevent further disaster. #HumanitarianResponse #MaiduguriFloods #Nigeria #CrisisResponse #BornoState #HumanitarianAid

#Floods!! Heavy rains in the past few days have caused some of the worst floods in East Africa. In Kenya reports indicated 70 people dead, more than 130k people affected, 64 public schools flooded, roads and bridges damaged and even the airport was affected. In neighboring Tanzania 155 people were killed and more than 200k people including 51000 households were affected. In Burundi- more than 200k people were affected with many schools damaged. The devastating effects of floods remains a sad reminder of the evolving impact of #climatechange and the need for #collaborativeefforts at strengthening #Preparednessandresponse #capacities within member states. And the rains are just beginning!!. We need to strengthen #earlywarning, #disasterpreparedness and #emergencyresponse #teams. #Communitypreparedness remains one key approach to limiting collateral damages from the devastating impact of climatechange including floods. #AfricaCDC #WHO pictures credit-reliefwebllll
