The path to joy is often rerouted on a detour due to mental health challenges large and small. I know because I’ve experienced it. Whether it’s when I’ve felt burned out or experiencing anxiety or elevated stress, it can take me to a different place where joy looks like a blip on the horizon. And while I’ve participated in therapy and healing work for 12 years, I’ve never been diagnosed with anything more severe than mild anxiety (aka my midlife crisis back in 2012). Imagine what it is like for someone that has a diagnosed condition that’s more significant? Having empathy with yourself, understanding what’s going on and where you are coming from will help lead you back to the path to joy. The timing of The Art and Science of Joy sharing this quote from me is serendipitous as I’m working on a thought piece for next weeks edition of Reading Between the Lines using the experiences of the participants of Navigating to a New Normal. And I share freely about my mental health journey because there is still stigma and prejudice in society about mental health and I refuse to feel shame about it when I can help another by sharing my story.
