It seems arguably clear that the #EU suffers from some form of democratic deficit. Yet, the true cause of this deficit isn’t represented in cliché criticisms echoed by populist eurosceptic politicians. Instead, the root cause for the EU’s democratic deficit lies in the lack of a European demos – a European public sphere of deliberation, participation, and interest in EU-level governance. On a more practically note however, though one may debate the real extent of a democratic deficit within internal governance, it seems arguable that proper parliamentary democratic standards are lacking significantly more in the EU’s external action. The reason for it? Inadequate parliamentary involvement and legitimacy. How, then, can the #EuropeanParliament address this issue? 🌟 Attention Lobbyists 🌟 Big moment in the setting of the next Commission's strategic political/policy priorities: The DGs have been at work drafting their Briefing Books, which are intended for their respective new Commissioners. Each briefing book is drafted in the DG and then submitted to the SecGen who will oversee these Briefing Books in the coming months - including the potential to edit and revise them. All Briefing Books have now been submitted. This means that, depending on your objectives, you should now be: 👉 trying to find out what is in the Briefing Book (for example, by leveraging your contacts in the DGs that are relevant to you) 👉 monitoring which issues are being put forward and/or coming up in the Briefing Books (to see if your issue is in there or not) These are not public documents so you will need to tread with caution - but they are critical documents for the coming months of EU agenda and policy shaping.
