What a year… 🏙️Naming Allison Chamberlain, PhD, Director of Research and Practice Relations with the Georgia Department of Public Health ♻️Jeremy Sarnat, PHD, was selected to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee 🎙️Launched Health Wanted, a weekly radio showand podcast produced in partnership with WABE 🥇The Burden of Brunswick, a story from the spring issue of Rollins Magazine, won a Gold Award in the 2024 Anthem Awards 🔬Lauren McCullough, PhD, as part of an international research team, received a $25 million grant through Cancer Grand Challenges that will help address cancer disparities in populations of African ancestry. 👵Regina Shih Shih, PhD, received a $17 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to establish the State Alzheimer’s Research Support Center. 🏭Anke Huels, PhD, and Donghai Liang, PhD, received two separate grants, totaling $15 million, from the National Institutes of Health to lead a first-of-its-kind, multifaceted study into why specific types of air pollution increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. 🏥Briana Woods-Jaeger, PhD, along with researchers from Emory School of Medicine, received a $6 million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to conduct a study aimed at improving health outcomes for pregnant Black women. 🌍 In July, the school introduced the Climate and Health Indicator Dashboard for Georgia, which provides data on the impact that climate change is having on human health in the state. New opportunities in public health: ASU’s new School of Technology for Public Health will launch its first degree programs in fall 2025. "The intention of both degrees is to basically help modernize the public health ecosystem and infrastructure," said Assistant Dean of Education Marc Adams, who also serves as program director for the PhD in population health in the College of Health Solutions. Great lecture at Warwick Medical School on the science of lay responder CPR. My takeaways: 👉 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home - you are much more likely to be applying your CPR skills to a family member or friend than to a stranger. 👉 Bystanders performing CPR requires a lot more than training in the techniques - cultural norms, feelings of self-efficacy, and the ability to recognise cardiac arrest all come into play. 👉 Aftercare for bystanders who have delivered CPR is important, feelings of "what just happened?" are normal even for those with training.

Join the School of Public Health for our April Dean's Grand Rounds on April 26 with guest speaker, Dr. Thomas LaVeist, Dean and Weatherhead Presidential Chair in Health Equity at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. LaVeist is also the chair of Board of Directors for the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH). Dr. LaVeist's research and writing has focused on three broad thematic research questions: 1) What are the social and behavioral factors that predict the timing of various related health outcomes (e.g. access and utilization of health services, mortality, entrance into nursing home?); 2) What are the social and behavioral factors that explain race differences in health outcomes?; and 3) What has been the impact of social policy on the health and quality of life of African Americans? His work includes both qualitative and quantitative analysis. LaVeist seeks to develop an orienting framework in the development of policy and interventions to address race disparities in health-related outcomes. Specific areas of expertise include: U.S. health and social policy, the role of race in health research, social factors contributing to mortality, longevity and life expectancy, quantitative and demographic analysis and access, and utilization of health services. Weill Cornell Medicine and the Cornell University: Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy has formed the Cornell Health Policy Center (CHPC) to serve as the hub for health policy impact, research, and training across Cornell campuses. “Leveraging the tremendous talent across the university, the Cornell Health Policy Center will develop effective, evidence-based health policies to ensure that all patients can access quality, comprehensive and affordable care – a task more important now than ever," said Dean Robert A. Harrington. Dr. Beth McGinty of Weill Cornell Medicine and Dr. Colleen Barry of Cornell University: Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy will co-lead the new organization. This past weekend, three individuals, including Karim Manji, MPH '03, received the Alumni Award of Merit, the highest honor presented to alum of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Through his work and research, Manji, a pediatrician and neonatologist, has dedicated his career to making the world a safer, healthier, and better place for children, young people, and families. His advice for others: “You have to make the world a better place, and your presence should be felt.
