🌙 Its Ramadan! It's important to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate the significance of this sacred month for our Muslim colleagues. Ramadan is not just about fasting from dawn till dusk; it's a time of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and community bonding. To my fellow coworkers, I want to kindly remind everyone that some of our Muslim colleagues will be fasting during this month. While it's understandable that we may feel hungry or thirsty throughout the day, it's important to respect their commitment to their faith and their observance of Ramadan. Here are a few tips for non-Muslim coworkers during Ramadan: 🍽️ Feel free to eat around us: It's absolutely okay to enjoy your meals during work hours, even when we are fasting. We understand that you may need to nourish yourselves, and it doesn't bother us in the slightest. 🤝 Show understanding and support: While fasting, our energy levels might fluctuate, and we may not be as active or talkative as usual. Your understanding and support during this time mean a lot to us. 🙏 Embrace diversity and inclusivity: We appreciate your willingness to accept and respect our religious practices. It's what makes our workplace truly diverse and inclusive. Remember, Ramadan is a time of joy and spiritual growth for us. Your understanding and willingness to accommodate our way of life make a world of difference. Let's continue to support each other and foster a culture of inclusivity in our workplace. Ramadan Mubarak to all of my fellow Muslims! 🥳 As we enter this blessed month, employers should demonstrate understanding and flexibility towards their Muslim employees observing Ramadan. Here are some considerations: ➡️ Allow flexibility in work hours to accommodate employees' needs during Ramadan, such as adjusting start and end times to accommodate fasting and prayers. ➡️ This is a HUGE thing even outside of Ramadan; it’s essential for employers to provide their Muslim employees with designated break times to perform their prayers throughout the day. ➡️ Foster a supportive and inclusive work environment where employees feel comfortable expressing their needs and observing religious practices. ➡️ Raise awareness among all employees about Ramadan and its significance, promoting understanding and respect for cultural and religious diversity in the workplace. As a Muslim-majority nation, the beautiful concept and teaching of Silahturahmi is well-known to most Indonesians from all backgrounds. Originating from the Arabic “Shilat al-rahim,” where “Shilat” means ‘to connect or establish or link,’ and “al-rahim” denotes ‘compassion,’ the term embodies a profound message. Kompas, 2022. This teaching truly resonates with me, serving as a beautiful reminder to maintain compassionate ties with everyone in our lives. It aligns with the essence of what “networking” should be—connecting and reconnecting with genuine intention to those beyond our immediate circle, whether at work or in our personal lives. During this joyous Eid Fitr celebration, it prompts us to reconnect those bonds of compassion towards all—a long-lost friend, a distant family member, former clients, colleagues, and everyone else around us. “Networking” shouldn’t be limited to times of need, but rather something we maintain regularly and genuinely, with or without any personal agenda. By embracing the spirit of Silahturahmi, we can build authentic relationships that go beyond transactional interactions. It encourages us to approach networking with empathy, care, and a desire to uplift one another.
