Heat Resilience & Performance Centre’s Post

In June, we brought together 150 people from across research, policy and climate science to launch a consensus statement in Parliament 'A Roadmap for Global Heat Resilience' to protect #health and save lives in the face of rising temperatures. Three takeaways from the event: 1️⃣ Collaboration will be key. Only by working in an interdisciplinary way and by bringing people from across diverse fields such as health, #policy, physiology, building design, engineering and more can we fully tackle the challenges of #extremeheat and protect the most vulnerable 2️⃣ It is vital that both physical AND #mentalhealth are considered in the discussion around the impact of rising temperatures on the human body. There is still a lot that we don't know about the link between heat and worsening mental health and much to do in this area. 3️⃣ Physiology is perfectly placed to help solve the multifaceted problem that is the impact of rising temperatures on human health because physiology intersects many fields and provides a human-centred approach and a focus on mechanisms. Precision public health and climate change: Heat preparedness strategies of today are built on a foundation of knowledge obtained from large population samples. They may fail to protect those most at risk from heat who have attributes furthest from population averages. What is the #Exposome ??? In healthcare we often talk about the genome , the inflammasome, the proteome and the gut microbiome. These "Omes" are important and add additional information in decoding heart disease beyond the traditional risk factors. Yet we find ourselves at a loss to explain the burden of cardiometabolic disease using the above models. The Exposome is defined by the CDC as he sum of all the exposures of an individual in a lifetime and how those exposures relate to health. The Exposome is a significant contributor to health and cardiovascular disease. however, due to therapeutic nihilism- What can i do aboutism ? As health care providers and researchers we perhaps do not pay it the attention it deserves. We are excited to run a conference with Charles Perkins Centre focusing on the #Exposome- The impact of climate change and environment on cardiovascular health. Speakers include Prof. Kazuaki Negishi describing how air pollution impacts heart health, Prof. Kathryn Williams speaking about social determinants of cardiometabolic health, Prof. Ollie Jay on heat as a silent and sometimes not so silent killer, Prof. Thomas Astell-Burt on built environment an how this impacts our health. 🌍 Exciting publication alert! We are pleased to share that Dr. Alexandra Schneider and Dr. 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗸𝗮 𝗛𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿 from our institute contributed to a groundbreaking study recently published in 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲, first-authored by Dr. Pierre Masselot from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London.   This study explores the impact of climate change on temperature-related mortality across European cities.   📄 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: 💠 The study shows that, without adaptation, the increase in heat-related deaths will consistently surpass any decrease in cold-related deaths across all scenarios in Europe. 💠 For the worst scenario, almost 50% net increase in climate change-related deaths is projected between 2015 and 2099, potentially totaling up to 2.35 million deaths in Europe. 💠 Northern Europe might experience a slight decrease in death rates, while Mediterranean and Eastern European areas are highly vulnerable. 💠 Even significant adaptation efforts will not be enough to reverse the trend of positive net increases in climate change-related deaths under current climate scenarios.   This critical work underscores the urgent need for mitigation and adaptation strategies to protect public health.   🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dueE3bRA   #ClimateChange #PublicHealth #NatureMedicine #ClimateImpact #Heatwaves #HealthResearch Helmholtz Munich

🚨 We are in a planetary emergency🚨 The planet's warning signals can no longer be ignored. Overwhelmed by the power and motivation of so many young doctors at the WONCA Europe 2024 conference! A great honour for me to deliver a keynote speech on planetary health and what we as doctors need to do now. I look forward to following up on this at the European Young Family Doctors' Movement (EYFDM) Forum 2025. It is medically indicated to tackle the climate crisis. We know from medicine how to act in emergencies. Keep cool, get an interdisciplinary team, start immediately according to the treatment plan. Doctors are central in shaping a socio-ecological transformation for better health. We must communicate climate health risks to politicians and the public and support decision-makers in making evidence-based decisions. Because our voice is trusted. We are responsible to tell the truth about collapsing planetary systems and protect our patients and society.
