Extreme heat is one if the clearest examples of the growing health impacts of climate change. Day 3 of COP29 saw a high-level event on addressing extreme heat, hosted by the UN secretary-general. It built nicely on the G20 declaration on climate and health, which saw a commitment from G20 countries to act on the secretary-general's recent Call to Action on Extreme Heat. Countries have recognised they urgently need to scale up action to prevent the worst health impacts of extreme heat, and support is available through the WMO-WHO Joint Office for Climate and Health, as well as the dozens of organisations that form the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN). Crucial organisations like the red cross (IFRC) have also been working on this issue for decades, and have strong ties to local communities and countries through their national red cross chapters. Today at #COP29 a High-level Event was Convened by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Delivering Early Warnings for All and Addressing Extreme Heat. On behalf the World Meteorological Organization, Prof. Celeste Saulo shared the following comments: "a) Heat is The silent killer b) WMO has been an active partner in the UNSG Call to Action on Extreme Heat and we are scaling-up activities in response. c) The WMO-WHO Joint Office for Climate and Health -led by Joy Shumake-Guillemot, DrPH- spearheads the Global Heat Health Information Network as a key mechanism for partnership, knowledge and user engagement. d) Forecasts and Warnings from National Meteorological Services are the linchpin of Heat Action Plans. We must ensure that they reach the last mile as part of the Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems. e) One thing is clear, to meet our shared goals, we must expand our coalition and strengthen partnership. The climate crises demands a collective whole-of-society approach." From July 21-25 next year, there will be the first-ever Global School on #Heat #Adaptation held in Montreal, Canada. https://lnkd.in/g948QFHd The school aims to engage #students, #stakeholders, and #researchers from various disciplines globally involved in understanding and reducing the impacts of #extreme #heat. Limited funding is available to support attendance of MSc or PhD students, with a priority given to those applying from LMICs. Deadline for applications is December 1, 2024. This initiative is led by Jennifer Vanos and Daniel Gagnon (Dan: you really need to get in LinkedIn!) and is part of our Global Center for Heat Adaptation funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Speakers will also include Zac Schlader, Nicholas Ravanelli, Ariane Middel, David Kaiser, Sophie L. Van Neste, Nicole Vargas, and me. I think most of us will agree that given recent geopolitical events, such initiatives that seek to support the next #leaders in #heat and #health research have never been more important.
