🚀🛰📡 *** Northwest Space Cluster Development *** The University of Manchester hosts the Northwest Space Cluster at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire. Collaboration and networking are at the heart of the Northwest Space Cluster, which was launched in 2022 by STFC in collaboration with a number of regional and national stakeholders. The North West’s strengths in nuclear, cyber security, advanced materials, engineering and manufacturing provide the region with enormous potential to capitalise from the unprecedented growth in the global space sector. Affectionately named as Constellations, these networking events are set up to foster an environment of collaboration and advancement for businesses looking to explore the opportunities of applying space technologies to existing and future innovations. By bringing together a wealth of knowledge and expertise within the region, the cluster aims to deliver sustainable economic and societal development, further advancing the UK Space sector as a whole. Ray Stott who is the Chairman of the Aerospace Industry Advisory Board at The University of Manchester said: "If you’re not on the cutting edge of research and development and you don’t have the latest techniques, then your competitiveness globally suffers, so links to academia are critical, but also the supply chain of talent for organisations. There’s a fight for talent globally, and this sector in the North West needs that talent pool. Links with industry and links with the university are critical to grow that critical mass, but also, to do the projects we are trying to do together." Space as a domain of economic and security competition between great powers has risen to become an arena of active statecraft for middle powers in the twenty-first century. In this paper for Business and Politics Journal Kun-Chin Lin, William Matthews, and the Adarga Research Institute’s Sam Olsen explore the challenges that Taiwan and Thailand face as they look to develop their domestic space industries and penetrate a market that is projected to be worth $1.1 trillion in 2040. Key takeaways include: - The Asian developmental state model is evolving in response to specific challenges of a global supply chain dominated by leading space firms and US regulations. - Significant differences in Taiwan’s and Thailand’s space and industrial policy approaches will likely create divergent technological trajectories. - The longer-term prospects for middle spacepowers remain contingent on the space race between the US and China. FWIW, if you already took the time to read Brandon Weichert’s book ‘Winning Space: How America Remains a Superpower’ then you’re not surprised by growing speculation today about the threat of #space-based Russian nuclear weapons or the possibility of a “space Pearl Harbor” sneak attack on US #satellite networks as #WWIII escalates. These are not new threats — nor are they limited to #Russia. #China, #Iran, & #NorthKorea are all in the game as well. If you are looking to get up the curve on how power & positioning in space can impact the balance of power on Earth, this is easily the most useful book I’ve read to date… & I’ve read a LOT of books on space, geopolitics, & national strategy over the years. https://a.co/d/71DbaKK

My latest academic paper, co-written with the brilliant Kun-Chin Lin of Johns Hopkins and William Matthews, now at Chatham House, all about the issues around middle power space-linked industrial policy, especially for #Taiwan and #Thailand. With the importance of #space increasing each week, especially with Great Power relations in mind, we hope this paper makes a useful contribution to the debate.

AFOSR proudly supports innovative research that advances our understanding of biosensing and defense technology. Dr. Annalisa Convertino (Principal Investigator) and her team at the National Research Council of Italy have made a significant breakthrough by capturing electrical signals generated by neuroendocrine pituitary cell networks using silicon nanowires. This pioneering work allows for detailed investigations into the electrical activity of the pituitary gland, a critical player in essential human functions and our response to emotional and physical stress. The implications of this research are profound, offering new insights into stress physiology and potential applications in defense technology. This discovery is a testament to AFOSR's commitment to leading and discovering basic research that ensures the future technological advancements of the United States Air Force and United States Space Force. AFOSR Program Officer: Dr. Sofi Bin-Salamon. Join us in exploring the future of biosensing and its impact on human health and defense. 🔗 Read the full article to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gjnRrF_h 💬 How do you envision this research influencing the future of biosensing and defense technology? Interesting times for the commercial space industry. Good to see that the US is taking seriously the opportunities that commercial space companies can provide to help secure the space domain and associated capabilities. The environment is increasingly contested and the technologies which rely on unrestricted access are becoming increasingly vulnerable. The unique ability of smaller commercial space companies to rapidly pivot and develop innovative capabilities to meet emerging threats must be encouraged and supported to reduce this vulnerability. Australia is also taking small steps in this direction. Hopefully the US precedent will increase the momentum of this movement.
