🚀🛰📡 *** Northwest Space Cluster Development *** The University of Manchester hosts the Northwest Space Cluster at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire. Collaboration and networking are at the heart of the Northwest Space Cluster, which was launched in 2022 by STFC in collaboration with a number of regional and national stakeholders. The North West’s strengths in nuclear, cyber security, advanced materials, engineering and manufacturing provide the region with enormous potential to capitalise from the unprecedented growth in the global space sector. Affectionately named as Constellations, these networking events are set up to foster an environment of collaboration and advancement for businesses looking to explore the opportunities of applying space technologies to existing and future innovations. By bringing together a wealth of knowledge and expertise within the region, the cluster aims to deliver sustainable economic and societal development, further advancing the UK Space sector as a whole. Ray Stott who is the Chairman of the Aerospace Industry Advisory Board at The University of Manchester said: "If you’re not on the cutting edge of research and development and you don’t have the latest techniques, then your competitiveness globally suffers, so links to academia are critical, but also the supply chain of talent for organisations. There’s a fight for talent globally, and this sector in the North West needs that talent pool. Space as a domain of economic and security competition between great powers has risen to become an arena of active statecraft for middle powers in the twenty-first century. In this paper for Business and Politics Journal Kun-Chin Lin, William Matthews, and the Adarga Research Institute’s Sam Olsen explore the challenges that Taiwan and Thailand face as they look to develop their domestic space industries and penetrate a market that is projected to be worth $1.1 trillion in 2040. My latest academic paper, co-written with the brilliant Kun-Chin Lin of Johns Hopkins and William Matthews, now at Chatham House, all about the issues around middle power space-linked industrial policy, especially for #Taiwan and #Thailand. Interesting times for the commercial space industry. Good to see that the US is taking seriously the opportunities that commercial space companies can provide to help secure the space domain and associated capabilities. The environment is increasingly contested and the technologies which rely on unrestricted access are becoming increasingly vulnerable. The unique ability of smaller commercial space companies to rapidly pivot and develop innovative capabilities to meet emerging threats must be encouraged and supported to reduce this vulnerability. Australia is also taking small steps in this direction. Hopefully the US precedent will increase the momentum of this movement.
