Some key highlights from today's Building Authentic Relationships panel at the 2024 Catalyst Annual Conference: 💡A funder's work is 85 percent showing up! Get out of your comfort zone and build relationships as people, not organizations. 💡It’s not about nonprofits ticking the right boxes. Funders and partners are in the work together and equally bring a vision to fruition. 💡We shouldn’t be in a deficit mindset and nonprofits shouldn’t be in competition with each other. There’s an abundance of wealth in philanthropy and in our communities. Let's reframe to an abundance mindset focused on strategic partnerships. 💡Unrestricted, multiyear funding is the most effective way for nonprofits to create lasting change in the community. Many nonprofits dedicate substantial time to securing project-based grants, which can lead to various challenges. Flexible philanthropic funding, also referred to as unrestricted funding or #corefunding, offers a solution by providing long-term financial support with the following key characteristics: 🎯 Unrestricted Use: Funds can be allocated where they are most needed, such as for core operations, capacity building, or new opportunities. 🎯 Autonomy and Adaptability: Nonprofits can quickly respond to changing circumstances or challenges. 🎯 Long-Term Impact: Flexible funding strengthens organizational resilience through investments in infrastructure, staff development, and strategic initiatives. Transitioning from grant- or project-based to flexible funding requires significant changes in how #nonprofits approach fundraising. 🗝️ To navigate these shifts, nonprofits can benefit from capacity-building support before embarking on flexible funding strategies. #nonprofitfundraising #nonprofitdevelopment Karen Weisblatt https://lnkd.in/eHGPTZTf

I'm sharing this article for visibility and reach. It has been a challenging time for nonprofits, from Independent Sector's recent report finding that 1 out of 5 nonprofit workers can't afford basic living expenses, to possible closures of impactful organizations like Callisto. I truly hope we see a turnaround and true valuing of the work nonprofits do, especially in environments where support is often based on what is trending and too readily shifts. https://lnkd.in/eG_3TSpk

Wage justice has been the forefront of my strategic priorities for my organization, and I have unfortunately continued to face push back and backlash because of the pervasive ideology that nonprofit workers aren’t supposed to make living wages and have made the decision to choose careers where being under market and pay cuts are expected. Without funders and leaders committed to pay equity, it is becoming increasingly difficult if not impossible to retain quality, passionate, out-performing staff who continue to do the people’s work in the Bay Area. Low-income in this area is $120,000 — by that metric, all of my staff falls below that line. Compounded by the fact that everyone on my team comes from the communities they serve, are the first and oftentimes, the only person in their entire families to graduate high school, go to college, and get a professional job; they continue to carry the generational trauma and financial burden of carrying the rest of their families on their backs. Attrition and burn out will continue to happen in this space when the expectation is for us to have bleeding hearts and wallets.
