Digital Watermarks Initiative: Successful sorting trials at Hündgen Entsorgung The HolyGrail 2.0 initiative has achieved a breakthrough in the sorting of flexible packaging with watermark technology from Digimarc combined with near-infrared (NIR) sensor technology from machine manufacturer Pellenc ST. In industrial tests at our site, recognition and sorting efficiencies of over 85% and a purity of more than 70% were achieved - a game changer for the recycling of plastic packaging! This innovation could therefore make a decisive contribution to meeting the EU targets for recycled plastics by 2030. An independent study by the technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen) and the University of Merseburg conducted on behalf of the German Ministry of the Environment (Umweltbundesamt) has found that thermochemical recycling of plastic offers a positive contribution to the circularity of plastics. One requirement is that the technology employed is technically mature and energetically optimized by integration of all product streams, including the process gases for their calorific value. If possible mechanical recycling is advantageous, however for mixed plastic streams thermochemical recycling is the best option according to the study: https://lnkd.in/eMcvjmFb

📊 New Regranulate Forecast & Waste Pricing Report for August 2024! 🌍♻️ On my channel Kreislaufgold, I just published the latest Recycario Regranulate Price Forecast, along with an in-depth analysis of current trends in waste pricing (baled goods). It is a collaboration with the scientists from prognostica GmbH, Würzburg (Germany) and myself. Some key takeaways: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is becoming mandatory across Europe, with fees and charges that vary widely by country for new packaging materials. According to a study by Recyda, plastic packaging faces the highest fees across several European countries, creating a challenging environment for flexible plastic packaging. The development of regranulate prices and the dynamic waste market continues to surprise. Despite stability in recycled LDPE prices, the pressure on waste pricing persists. Discover more about: How EPR systems are evolving, with incentives for eco-friendly packaging design. The latest trends in regranulate prices and baled plastic waste. Forecasts for 2025 and what recyclers should be preparing for now. Curious to dive into the full analysis? Head over to Kreislaufgold and explore the Recycario subchannel for the complete report. Germany has just published its national circular economy strategy. On page 102 there are statements about chemical recycling. Germany, in this strategy, favours the application of mass balancing with „fuel use exempt“ and admits that it has continuously been lobbying for this on EU level. It also states that chemical Recycling shall be limited to waste that can only be incinerated. This statement is bluntly naive and based on false assumptions, caused by extreme lobbying activity from BASF. BASF knows perfectly well -that CR is over 90% pyrolysis -that pyrolysis is not complementary to mechanical recycling but competes for the best suitable feedstock -that pyrolysis will not decrease plastic production but support exponential growth -that CR does not make the cake bigger, but will cannibalise mechanical recycling. -that mass balance with fuel exempt is simply consumer deception and therefore illegal -that behind the scenes on EU level BASF is already lobbying for a concept called „dual use fuels“, that is fuels counted as recyclate, but being still fuel that is excluded from the recycling definition -that the main outcome of pyrolysis is fuel -that pyrolysis is more energy intensive than virgin production, calculated without calculation tricks -that pyrolysis is not economically viable and will never run at scale. -that BASF is continuously and planfully deceiving politicians in order to achieve their objectives. -that WtE companies are not at all worried because they know perfectly well that BASF bookkeeping tricks will in real life not diminish plastic waste generation. This type of policy will further undermine consumer trust in politics and business operators. Thank you Olaf Scholz for another political failure. https://lnkd.in/d3zeTHMW

⚡ An important step towards a circular economy in Germany - the #NKWS In a significant move towards a more sustainable future, the German government has unveiled a draft of its National Circular Economy Strategy (Nationale Kreislaufwirtschaftsstrategie =NKWS). This strategy, set to be approved by the cabinet in autumn, aims to halve the country's per capita consumption of raw materials from 16 to 8 tons per year by 2045 while simultaneously increasing the use of secondary raw materials. Our co-founder Matthias Ballweg emphasizes in his guest article for FOCUS online that this step is crucial for two reasons: 1. 📈 A Booming Growth Sector: Circular economy is a rapidly growing field, with the start-up industry in this sector experiencing exceptional growth. Investments in circular economy are not only environmentally beneficial but also financially sound. 2. 🌄 Independence from Resource-Rich Countries: Embracing a circular economy will reduce Germany's reliance on resource-rich countries, particularly those with authoritarian regimes. This will enhance the country's economic independence and resilience in the long term. While the #NKWS contains ambitious targets and forward-thinking ideas, such as reclassifying building materials as non-waste and prioritizing building preservation over demolition, it does not address the potential constraints that stakeholders face. Despite some potential for improvement, the #NKWS represents a significant step in the right direction. As we move towards implementation, it will become increasingly clear that achieving the strategy's goals will require not only embracing new approaches but also shedding outdated ones. Manuel Häußler wants to turn the way we produce and even think about plastics upside down. In his vision of a #CircularEconomy, chemistry produces high-performance #plastics (comparable to what we're used to) but ➡️From waste and by-products instead of fossil fuels ➡️ using much less energy, thanks to natural processes like yeast and algae fermentation ➡️That can be completely recycled at the end of its life ➡️ restarting the cycle For his project, Manuel received the German Studienpreis 2022 by the Körber-Stiftung and funding by SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen.
