🌍 Bursting at the Seams: Insights into Urban Displacement in Sudan 🌍
I’m incredibly proud to share the findings of a joint research project I had the privilege of contributing to last year alongside the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Sudan and 12 local NGOs. This extensive assessment, conducted across six states—Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref, Northern, White Nile, and Blue Nile—aimed to uncover the socioeconomic impacts of displacement on both displaced and host communities and identify their most pressing needs.
📊 Through household surveys, key informant interviews, and market assessments, we gathered insights from over 8,600 households. The results provide a comprehensive view of the far-reaching implications of displacement in Sudan, a country grappling with one of the largest displacement crises globally, with 11.2 million internally displaced people (IDPs) recorded as of November 2024.
🔑 Key Findings from 'Bursting at the Seams':
The report highlights persistent needs across critical areas, including:
✅ Livelihoods
✅ Health
✅ Food and Water Security
✅ Shelter
A significant finding was the disproportionate impact on host communities, with food insecurity emerging as a key concern. Meanwhile, IDPs reported higher needs across most other sectors, underscoring the importance of addressing both immediate needs and long-term resilience.
💡 Displacement doesn't just affect those forced to flee—it also disrupts livelihoods, limits access to essential services, and strains social cohesion in host communities. Understanding these dynamics is key to addressing urgent needs and fostering sustainable recovery.
It was an incredible experience to lead the research design, data cleaning, analysis, and contribute to the report drafting for this project. The collaborative effort between NRC, IDMC, and local organisations has provided valuable insights to guide future humanitarian responses in Sudan.
📢 As we step into 2025, I look forward to continuing this important work and promoting evidence-based solutions for displacement-affected communities.
