We are excited to announce the completion of our latest project with Samuel Hall in #SouthSudan! 🌍 🚀 Together, we’ve conducted community-based data assessments across 4 regions in South Sudan. These regions were designated by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency as areas of relative stability where sustainable reintegration of returnees might be possible. Since the signing of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) in 2018, over 507,000 people have returned home. Recognizing the critical need for comprehensive data in these areas, Space4Good researched, retrieved and conducted a quality check on the currently freely available datasets and #geospatial indicators related to various factors such as environment, infrastructure, and economic opportunities to support #reintegration efforts, and investigated the data gaps. These datasets and discovered #data gaps will be the basis for further in-country research and community profiling. This initiative aligns with one of our Space4Good goals of facilitating #peace and resilience in conflict-affected regions.

Local Refugee-Led Organizations (RLOs) in Lebanon, such as Basmeh & Zeitooneh, have proven essential in filling gaps left by larger actors during the 2024 aggression, showcasing the power of community-driven rapid response networks. NEW RESEARCH REPORT I The role of national civil society and media in supporting accountability around humanitarian interventions in Somalia This study co-authored by Ibrahim Jibril, Dr Stephanie Diepeveen & Mahad Wasuge examines how domestic actors in Somalia, including local media, civil society organizations, and government institutions, view and engage with accountability.

We are proud to present our latest research paper: "Strengthening Social Protection Systems in Lebanon: Challenges and Responses to the 2024 Aggression." This publication, driven by the dedicated efforts of Basmeh & Zeitooneh's Research Unit and Field Engagement Officers, delves into the multifaceted challenges faced by Syrian refugees and Lebanese host communities during these turbulent times. From heightened displacement and economic hardships to critical gaps in accessing essential services, our findings underscore the urgent need for robust, inclusive social protection mechanisms. 📌 Key Highlights: -The rise in forced displacement and its strain on humanitarian systems. -The role of Refugee-Led Organizations in providing rapid and effective crisis responses. -Policy recommendations for equitable and sustainable social protection for all. This research is a call to action for policymakers, international agencies, and community leaders to prioritize resilience, inclusion, and cohesion. 🌍 Bursting at the Seams: Insights into Urban Displacement in Sudan 🌍 I’m incredibly proud to share the findings of a joint research project I had the privilege of contributing to last year alongside the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Sudan and 12 local NGOs. This extensive assessment, conducted across six states—Red Sea, Kassala, Gedaref, Northern, White Nile, and Blue Nile—aimed to uncover the socioeconomic impacts of displacement on both displaced and host communities and identify their most pressing needs. 📊 Through household surveys, key informant interviews, and market assessments, we gathered insights from over 8,600 households. The results provide a comprehensive view of the far-reaching implications of displacement in Sudan, a country grappling with one of the largest displacement crises globally, with 11.2 million internally displaced people (IDPs) recorded as of November 2024. 🔑 Key Findings from 'Bursting at the Seams': The report highlights persistent needs across critical areas, including: ✅ Livelihoods ✅ Health ✅ Food and Water Security ✅ Shelter A significant finding was the disproportionate impact on host communities, with food insecurity emerging as a key concern. Meanwhile, IDPs reported higher needs across most other sectors, underscoring the importance of addressing both immediate needs and long-term resilience. 💡 Displacement doesn't just affect those forced to flee—it also disrupts livelihoods, limits access to essential services, and strains social cohesion in host communities. Understanding these dynamics is key to addressing urgent needs and fostering sustainable recovery. It was an incredible experience to lead the research design, data cleaning, analysis, and contribute to the report drafting for this project. In this report, I and my colleagues Stephanie Diepeveen & Mahad Wasuge studied how local media, civil society organizations, and government institutions view and engage with accountability in the humanitarian sector. We identified overlooked perspectives, examined how local stakeholders attempt to improve accountability to their communities, analyzed the political economy dynamics shaping these efforts, addressed main challenges, and presented targeted recommendations to each stakeholder.
