🌟 Eastern 2024 NASBA Meeting Highlights 🌟 I had the privilege of attending the NASBA Eastern 2024 NASBA meeting, where a panel of final-year accounting majors, including some interns, captivated the audience. They discussed the profession's pipeline issues and shared what drew them to becoming CPAs. The entire room was impressed with this group's insights and passion. If they are our future, it is truly bright. 🌟 A common thread among these bright minds was the impact of mentors—some had them in high school, while others found mentorship early in college. Michael Wade ,CPA, CGMA,MBA, MAcc you make a difference!! So glad we connected and I was able to hear what you are doing with your students and UWorld Accounting to make sure they get through their exams. Each panel member agreed that addressing pipeline issues starts with engaging students during their high school years, showcasing the fantastic careers in this field. If you are considering outsourcing to bring talent into your pipeline before you that ask yourself these 3 things. 1. Have you audited your internal processes to get your staff certified? 2. Do you have uncertified staff that could be coached up? 3. Is your firm running any high school internship programs or partnering with local CPA State Society Partners to bring awareness to the profession? We have an excellent opportunity to reach out to our local communities and share our knowledge about this career and its promising future. Let's seize it because the future of accounting is bright! 💼✨ #Accounting #Finance #StudentSuccess #CareersInAccounting #DEI #CTE Book a meeting with me directly to look at your firm's plan. https://lnkd.in/gPTRt3_V

Are you as #demure as these aspiring CPAs?? I sure hope so. Here are some ways to best prepare yourself for a career as a CPA: 1) Make sure you know what credits are required to qualify for the CPA PEP program and work hard to get those done. 2) Get involved in the community. Find an internship, volunteer, and find community events to attend. 3) Network with current CPAs and do your best to stay connected with them. 4) Learn about the designation and find out how you can help empower others and give back to the community however you can. If you do these things well and consistently, you'll find success in your career as a #CPA. #CPABC #careerdevelopment #cpalife Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia

Finally taking a moment to reflect on the spring 2024 semester and the entire 2023-24 academic year, it is clear that there was no shortage of growth and knowledge gained. My fourth semester at Missouri State University was successful in terms of not only academics, while achieving a 4.0 GPA for the semester and earning a spot on the Dean's List (Intermediate Accounting II really challenged me on this--if you know, you know), but also in terms of extracurriculars and professional experience. This past year was a wildly successful one for the Missouri State IMA Student Chapter (a.k.a. Accounting Club). Membership increased by 88% during the year, and we were able to plan and host several new events as well as maintain traditional events hosted by the club. One of these new events included the Accounting Club Success Fest, which replaced the Annual Accounting Club BBQ as the event taking place the night before the Missouri State University College of Business Career Fair and serving as a more casual way for students to connect with potential employers. At the conclusion of the year, our chapter was recognized by IMA | Institute of Management Accountants for achieving Gold Status among IMA Student Chapters. It was also a successful year for Missouri State Collegiate DECA, as we saw a 50% increase in competitors at the Missouri Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference (SCDC) and a 25% increase in competitors at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC). Additionally, we held more than twice the amount of organization meetings than in the 2022-23 year, including the hosting of multiple prominent business figures from the Springfield area such as the CEO of the Greater Springfield Board of REALTORS®, Jeff Kester, and the CEO of CoxHealth, Max Buetow. Professionally, after completing another semester in the fall with O'Reilly Auto Parts Accounts Receivable, I joined KPM CPAs & Advisors to complete a tax internship for the duration of the spring semester. This was an amazing experience in which I was able to learn from many seasoned professionals as well as my peers/young professionals. I could not have asked for a better scenario for my first experience in public accounting, as it was evident that KPM truly "walks the walk" when it comes to their firm culture. Since I finished up at KPM, I started my first audit internship at Grant Thornton (US) in St. Louis. Being three weeks into this experience with five weeks to go, I have already had the chance to work on multiple audits for varying company types. I am looking forward to the remainder of my time with GT before heading back to Springfield to get started on my final year of undergraduate classes and return to working at O'Reilly.

With the rates of new CPAs entering the industry lagging, Minnesota and firms in the state are addressing the CPA talent pipeline by working to reach students earlier in their career decisions. Check out what CLA and Christianson CPAs & Consultants are doing in Minnesota Society of CPAs' recent article, Sowing Seeds. CLA's Don Loberg, CPA shares how initiatives like our high school internship program are essential in providing young talent opportunities to explore the professional services industry. https://hubs.li/Q02yRqT60

Accounting firms nationwide are facing a shortage of new talent. What's the answer to this? One Big Four firm believes that encouraging high school students with paid pre-college accounting internships might just work. As someone who has seen the declining interest in the accounting profession at schools, this seems like a clever idea. Based on how student opinion changes throughout the internship, it appears to be quite effective.

Accountancy Student Spotlight: Allison Kopac Hometown: Ashburn, VA Residence Hall: McGlinn Hall What inspired you to pursue a degree in accounting? My mom! She is a CPA and despite all my effort to avoid the subject, I found it came naturally, and my mom was nothing but supportive of my career ambition and helped me along the way. It also has made us much closer. How has your perception of accounting evolved since starting college? I came into college thinking I would hate the subject-- that it was boring and black and white. However, in my coursework I found that it was anything but that. Accounting is the language of business, and is a skill that I am honored to have had the opportunity to learn. It is challenging, but also rewarding, and I truly enjoy it. Knowing accounting opens the door to so many opportunities, beyond just the Big Four. What is your favorite class you've taken and why? My favorite class that I have taken is Sustainability Accounting and Impact Investing with Professor Vera Munoz. The class taught me the fundamentals of ESG and has opened my eyes to a wide variety of opportunities for good in the profession of accounting and in the business world. What did you like best about your summer internship? What was the most important takeaway from such an experience? I liked how hands-on my internship was. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of work I was able to either shadow or complete myself, and it gave me a good sense for what the career is going to entail. In addition, I worked for KPMG in Chicago in the audit division and greatly appreciated how welcome the people made me feel and how close my coworkers were. Between the work and the people, I am so excited to return to the firm and begin my career in audit! What advice do you have for other students aspiring to pursue a career in accounting? My advice to students would be to ask questions! You don't know what you don't know, and asking questions is the only way to truly gain an understanding of the profession. Everyone has been so kind to me, especially at my internship, and more than willing to meet for coffee or just to chat. This goes for classes and alumni as well. You'll never regret asking too many questions but you will regret not asking enough.
