Curious about Nmap's inner workings? Let's dig in: 1. Port Scanning: Nmap systematically sends packets to each port on a device, essentially asking, "Are you open?" It then carefully analyzes the responses received. If it gets a reply, it marks the port as open; otherwise, it's marked closed. This process helps map out the device's network services. 2. OS Detection: Nmap takes it a step further by examining the properties of these responses. By comparing them against a library of known OS fingerprints, it deduces the operating system running on the device. 3. TCP SYN Requests: Nmap's flexibility shines here. Depending on the scan type and user preference, it can either send these "Are you open?" packets itself or ask the device's operating system to do it. This decision affects the scan's stealthiness and detection likelihood.
