💧💰🇺🇸 New water focused projects: a) The US Army Corps of Engineers is releasing a new memorandum outlining ways it will support the protection, restoration, and enhancement of waters and wetlands that are more vulnerable following the U.S. Supreme Court’s Sackett decision.   b) The White House Council on Environmental Quality is releasing a Wetland and Water Protection Resource Guide for Tribes, States, Territories, local governments, private land owners, and non-governmental organizations to advance water resource protection. The Resource Guide highlights technical assistance and funding opportunities available across the federal government.   c) NOAA National Ocean Service is announcing $60 million from the President’s Investing in America agenda for fish hatcheries to produce salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River Basin. This builds on a historic agreement the Biden-Harris Administration secured in partnership with Tribes and States in the Pacific Northwest to restore wild salmon and steelhead populations.   d) The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the Understanding Water Affordability Across Contexts, LIHWAP Water Utility Affordability Survey Report, which highlights the differences in water affordability across the country. President Biden’s Fiscal Year 2025 Budget provides $4.1 billion for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), helping families access home energy and weatherization assistance, and proposes to allow States the option to use a portion of those funds to provide water bill assistance to low-income households. #water #waterscarcity #watercrisis #tech #watertech #startup #innovation #future #sustainability #environment #technology #investment #capital #research #unitednations #climatechange #potus #biden #harris #rivers #cleandrinkingwater #cleanwater #wetlands

You must to read this unbelievable, but very real story about peatlands from Minnesota to fully grasp the insanity: "Minnesota is selling the rights to mine peat out of protected wetlands and state-owned forests for as little as $11.85 an acre, even as taxpayers spend up to 250 times that amount to restore previously degraded peatlands. Taxpayers could spend up to $3,000 an acre on peatland restoration as state and federal agencies begin ambitious reclamation projects next year. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently gave Minnesota $20 million to restore up to 10,000 acres of the bogs that form peat, because of their unique importance to rare wildlife, water quality and, most of all, greenhouse gas emissions. State lawmakers also set aside $9 million to restore several thousand acres of peat. The same agency that will help lead the restoration work, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, is selling the right to mine peat on 8,194 acres of public lands for a total of $127,604 a year. " ( link to full article below in comments) This reminded my the 'orphan gas / oil wells' saga of the US: there are more than 3 million abandoned/orphaned oil/gas leaking wells in the US as the bonds created to guarantee the adequate post-production treatment and care of these wells were systematically set below the cost of such remediation. The wetlands of Colorado are primary habitat for more than 120 species, from the San Luis Valley's sandhill cranes to northern leopard frogs. More than half of this essential habitat has been lost since the 1800s to draining, filling and excavating. We need to protect what's left. These critical waters were left vulnerable after a Supreme Court decision gutted federal wetland protections last spring. The Colorado state legislature is considering Senate Bill 24-127, which falls drastically short of restoring these safeguards to our precious wetlands. Another bill, House Bill 24-1379, provides the policy and programs needed to restore protections that have worked for Colorado for decades. https://lnkd.in/grbwnaAx

Last week, Permit Sonoma, Senior Environmental Lopez, collaborated with Environmental Specialists from WRA, to conduct a survey of critical infrastructure and roadways crucial for emergency vehicle access during fire incidents. The Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project is designed to reduce wildfire risk to life, property, and to foster healthy landscapes that are resilient to wildfire across the County. The project collaborates with fire professionals, technical experts, and community-based organizations to identify priority locations for large-scale vegetation management activities. This will help reduce hazardous fuel loads across four designated project areas. The project aims to implement large-scale vegetation management on public lands, private lands, and road networks within designated project areas within the County. Mobile Baykeeper joins the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce when they say, "We believe economic prosperity and environmental protection can go hand in hand." The positive economic impact of a deeper ship channel can happen without destroying others' ability to make a living. We must protect our neighbors who depend on healthy waters to make a living, too. There's about 49,000 jobs connected to commercial fishing, trapping, oystering, and recreational fishing that will be impacted by this Corps project - and we're proposing some realistic ways we can avoid that: ☐ Limit in-bay disposal to "beneficial use" ☐ Formal study on channel wave energy mitigation ☐ Oxygen-loss mitigation devices ☐ "Living shoreline" conversion to mitigate increased wave energy The current plan to deepen and widen the channel will allow for bigger ships and more ships. But the ongoing maintenance will put about 90 million cubic yards of dredge spoil or mud into Mobile Bay. That is enough to cover the entirety of Mobile Bay with 2.5 inches of mud. Claiming that expanding roadways reduces emissions is an outdated solution to an ever growing problem. we should be looking at how to do more to dedicate emissions reduction dollars to getting people out of their cars - transit, bike/walk lanes and electric first/last mile solutions
