Hydropower generates approximately 14-17% of the world's electricity, playing a crucial role in the renewable energy sector. However, it faces challenges such as ecosystem impacts and risks to aquatic life. A new type of hydro turbine has been developed to address these concerns. This Fish Safe Restoration Hydro Turbine (RHT) features thick, curved blades that create an "airbag" effect, reducing the likelihood of direct strikes on fish. Impressively, it maintains over 90% peak hydraulic efficiency and can be applied to both new and existing hydropower plants. Tests have shown a 100% immediate survival rate and a 48-hour survival rate for fish passage. In order for hydropower to meet the challenges of the energy transition, climate change, and 24/7 reliability, it's imperative that we grow and strengthen Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH). To further support the push for greater adaption of pumped storage technology, NHA has partnered with Kleinschmidt Associates to develop a new report that outlines the current state of this vital technology while providing policy recommendations to protect PSH. The three most urgent recommendations coming out of the report, and the subsequent session at NHA's Clean Currents, are as follows: - Advocating for an investment tax credit that helps put PSH at parity with other energy storage technologies - Fully valuing all grid services, including those provided by PSH, that may not be fully compensated - Reforming permitting policy to expedite PSH development Take action to advance these recommendations by contacting your Member of Congress, and check out this informative and interactive report: https://bit.ly/4dKoxSB
