Below is a stunningly beautiful video of a starling murmuration. We look at it and detect beauty at how synchronized and flowing it is - but there is no choreography here - only emergence stemming from simple animal behaviors. Each starling follows simple rules: 1) Stay close to your nearest neighbors 2) Don't get too close 3) Fly towards the center That's it. By each bird following those simple rules we get these incredible flowing shapes in the sky. We don't think about it, but this same dynamic applies to humans and human systems. If you are one of 8 billion humans alive today, living in a country that is part of global economic system, you (generally) follow simple behavioral rules, like: 1) Get a job, vocation or start a business and coordinate with others to maximize your $$ earnings/profits. 2) Spend your financial surplus on basic needs, and if more remains, spend on leisure/fun and if more remains, save. 3) Follow the accepted social norms and behaviors of your culture Since - at the global level - GDP - the 'goal' of our activities - is 99% correlated with energy consumption and 100% correlated with material use, the human corollary to a starling murmuration is a mindless, energy hungry 'Superorganism'. Just like the emergent shapes and patterns the birds make in the sky, there is not one starling, or group of starlings that is 'calling the shots' - the 'shape' (unbridled global economic growth) is an emergent phenomenon from each of us following these simple behavioral rules, on the backs of vast amounts of stored sunlight and geological caches of underground minerals. Unlike, bird flocks however, this 'metabolism' is resulting in: excess heat absorption by oceans and atmosphere, ~70% drop in animal/bird/insect/reptile populations since 1970, and myriad other expansions beyond planetary boundaries. "Back in the day", this emergent phenomenon seemed reasonable, and even good, when our 'murmuration' was small, but from the perspective of the host (Earth's natural systems and biosphere), the human 'Superorganism' is reaching terminal velocity - it's abundantly clear the murmuration can't continue to grow for much longer. This phenomenon is 'no ones fault' - it is emergent from billions of humans following simple rules in the presence of vast resource surplus. Fueled first by agricultural surplus, then fossil energy, then fiat currencies, now by NVIDIA chips and artificial intelligence, all making the human 'murmuration' bigger in Earth's skies. Recognition of this biophysical phenomenon presents us with the challenge of our lives - of our era - perhaps even of our entire species existence - how to culturally (at nation state and even global level), shift this emergent phenomenon in real time without destroying conditions for life on the one planet that is known to host conscious life. Murmuration - a unique phenomenon - Flock of birds swirl & swoop in the sky - Amazing to see A shape-shifting flock of thousands of starlings, called a murmuration. Can🌲-planting warm our #climate? If done in the wrong places, certainly! In our new perspective, we highlight why tree-planting in the #Arctic and large parts of the #boreal zone is not going to cool our #climate, but will in fact lead to #warming in the majority of the region. Why? Mainly do to #albedo changes, but also due to disturbance of the large yet vulnerable #soil #carbon pools, and the dramatically increased risk of Arctic vegetation being hit by climate warming-fueled #wildfires or #pest #outbreaks. #Natural #ecosystems (incl. 🦌) seems to be the better option for both #climate and #biodiversity We call for #Naturebasedclimatesolutions to focus on the entire #energybalance of the #Earth rather than just #carbon #storage.
