 Space as a safe environment, open to exploration, peaceful use and international cooperation by current and future generations, this is the concept at the heart of IAC2024, dedicated to the theme “Responsible Space for Sustainability”, organised by the International Astronautical Federation and hosted in Italy by the AIDAA - The Italian Association of Aeronautics and Astronautics , with the support of #Leonardo and the Italian Space Agency (Agenzia Spaziale Italiana).   💡 ASI, in collaboration with AIDAA and Leonardo, has launched a Call for Ideas to invite third and fourth years of Italian secondary schools, in Italy and abroad, to reflect on the theme of sustainability and to delve into its contents. The challenge is to develop a project proposal that answers one of the following questions:   ◾ How to use space technologies to make our Planet more sustainable?   ◾ How can Space and space exploration be made more sustainable?   ◾ How can Italy be the engine of space sustainability?   🎯 The aim of the proposals is to use space science and technology to make the Planet and Space more sustainable, as well as to use satellite or mission data and services to improve the status of one or more of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. https://lnkd.in/d7ac8Tq4 A historic day with enormous reach in terms of achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (Social Development Goal) 10 - "Reduced Inequalities"! In 2022, high-ranking representatives of European Space Agency - ESA announced that they would make space travel possible for everyone and thus probably initiate a rethink - in keeping with the motto "#Space4All" - physical impairment should no longer be an obstacle to becoming a (para)astronaut. In a major campaign and a complex selection process, the perfect candidate for this pioneering project was to be selected - the British leg-amputee former Paralympian and doctor John McFall prevailed, a milestone (probably the most personal for him) had been reached! From now on, the scientific and practical part of the unique feasibility study began - to find out whether/to what extent a physical impairment has any effects in space/under space conditions. Over the last two years, John has completed countless training courses at the European Astronaut Training Center in Cologne, which physically non-impaired selected astronaut candidates also have to complete as part of their basic training. The results were always evaluated by a (space) medical expert panel. On July 19, 2024, the time had come for the decision of #ESA - after completing all tests and training and the corresponding analysis and weighing up of the results: John McFall's physical impairment is not an obstacle to a stay in space! A decision with far-reaching personal and social consequences, I am convinced. Of course, there is no date set for John's first space flight yet, but I especially congratulate him on everything he has achieved so far and the #ESA for having the courage to actually live the motto "Space4All" and thus contribute to the inclusion and equality of physically impaired people, not only in science but also in society as a whole!🚀👩🚀

The selection process, meticulously executed by ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization and IAM, exemplifies India's commitment to excellence. Narendra Modi's emphasis on indigenization in space technology reflects India's ambition to become a global leader in the space sector. Women's participation in missions like Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan underscores our commitment to inclusivity and diversity. Sunita Williams' Diwali Message from Space: A Lesson in Resilience and Positivity When astronaut Sunita Williams shared her Diwali message from the space station—"Diwali is a time of joy as goodness in the world prevails"—it sounded like a simple, heartfelt wish. But understanding the context behind her words reveals a much deeper significance. Williams, along with her fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore, launched aboard Boeing's Starliner on June 5, 2024. Originally, their mission was intended to last only 10 days. However, due to unforeseen technical issues with the Starliner, the mission was extended, transforming what was supposed to be a brief trip into a journey of over eight months. Now, her return is scheduled for February 2025, after the docking of the SpaceX Crew-9 spacecraft. The fact that Williams can share such a positive message despite the unexpected turn of events is remarkable. Imagine an ordinary person confined to a small space for days on end—the psychological toll would be overwhelming. While astronauts are meticulously trained for the challenges of space travel, it’s clear that such resilience, especially with a smile, is a testament to a strong mind and spirit. In our own lives, when we face challenges, we often let our moods spiral downward. We may feel despondent or question our purpose. But figures like Sunita Williams remind us of the power of staying grounded and resilient. Her ability to share joy under such challenging circumstances reflects the wisdom of someone in control of her mind and emotions. In delivering her Diwali message—celebrating the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and hope over despair—Williams shows that she truly embodies these values. Interplanetary.tv: Space for Humanity (S4H) is expanding its support for astronauts by introducing three ways to collaborate with them. - by Frederic Eger - The first is the Citizen Astronaut Program (CAP) Graduate, which prepares future space flyers for their journey and the transformative experience of the Overview Effect. CAP graduates can also opt-in to a post-flight, year-long impact project based on leadership, community development, and lasting impact. The second is the Citizen Astronaut Ambassador, who independently travels to space but loves S4H's mission and wants to spread it globally. They collaborate with future ambassadors on ways to use their passions and expertise to raise awareness of S4H's work. They can also choose to take the CAP program and become a CAP graduate. The third option is the Space for Humanity Citizen Astronaut, chosen through an inclusive selection process for their dedication to creating lasting impact in the world. S4H CAs are chosen through the S4H team's orchestration and participate in a year-long post-flight impact project. Monthly meetings are held to track impact markers and encourage CAs to become impactful leaders in their communities. For those going to space independently, becoming a CAP Graduate is recommended. For those wanting to boost the S4H Mission and democratize access to space, becoming a S4H Ambassador is also considered.
