More than anything else, this is what stops consumer brands from succeeding in China. It’s not the competition. It’s not the cost of marketing. It’s not the regulatory environment. It’s not a lack of control over distributors. It’s not the lack of localised content or products. It’s Fear. Fear of failure Fear of not selling Fear of building brand first Fear of repeating other’s mistakes But there is so much to be optimistic about in China. 🌏 China is the largest consumer economy on the planet. 🏗 There are 145 cities in China with more than 1 million people. 💥 China has 21 cities with more people than Sydney, Washington or Barcelona. 🚀 China’s economy is forecast to grow by at least 4.8% in 2024. 📈 Cross Border E-commerce in China is growing at 15% per year. During my visit to Korea last year, I discovered a multitude of brands pushing for growth and offering global consumers fresh new products. Beauty startups and health and wellness brands have received government funding for years as part of a national drive for growth. These brands must expand into global markets at scale, as it's tough to stand out in an already crowded domestic market. Despite past success in China, the COVID years stunted trade and travel between the countries. However, there has been a rebound in the last year. Alibaba.com, China’s largest online marketplace, has recognized this opportunity and is gearing up to launch an exclusive website for Korean products in the second half of this year. This strategic move aims to cater to the increased demand from B2B buyers for high-quality Korean-made products. Why is this interesting? -"Reverse Commute" - a Chinese marketplace business model dedicated to bringing in quality products, curated from overseas vs. a Chinese marketplace pressing into other nations with "made in China" offerings - Dedicated Platform: Korean brands will soon have a distinct platform to showcase their products, boosting their competitiveness and expanding their global sales reach. - Membership Trial Program: Korean small and medium enterprises can access this exclusive site by paying an annual fee of 280,000 won ($201), offering a cost-effective gateway to new markets. - Rising Demand: Sales of Korean products on Alibaba.com have seen a remarkable surge over the past year, especially in categories like auto parts, instant noodles, skincare products, and red ginseng. This initiative not only highlights that Alibaba is seeing the demand strong demand for Korean products but also the significant growth opportunities in the Chinese market for Korean SMEs! 🚀 Annie Ho Noah Herschman Juanita Neville-Te Rito Lauren Lee Jo Gaines Jane Donohoe #Korea #China #Alibaba #SMEs #InternationalBusiness #Growth

🌟 Why China is More Than Just a Market—It’s a Game Changer 🌟 When it comes to global business strategy, China is no longer an option—it’s a necessity. But succeeding in China requires more than just ambition. It demands a deep understanding of a market that’s as complex as it is rewarding. 🚀 Key Insight: The rules of the game are different here. China’s rapid pace of innovation, unique consumer behaviors, and distinct regulatory environment mean that what works elsewhere may not work here. But those who take the time to understand and adapt can unlock enormous potential. 💡 3 Insights for Winning in China: 💡 1. Think Mobile-First: With over 1 billion mobile users, China’s digital landscape is mobile-centric. Your strategy needs to be too. 2. Leverage E-commerce Giants: Platforms like Alibaba and JD.com aren’t just online stores—they’re ecosystems. Partnering with them can give you unparalleled market access. 3. Invest in Relationships: Success in China often comes down to the strength of your local relationships. Building trust and “guanxi” can make all the difference. 🔥 Pro Tip: Adaptability is your biggest asset. China’s market is dynamic, and strategies need to evolve quickly to stay ahead. #BusinessInChina #GlobalStrategy #Ecommerce #Mobile #Leadership #Technology #China #FutureBusiness #digital #Game #Change #ThinkFuture #Future #Trust

5 questions we ask brands when considering export
It has been great to connect with a few buyers in Taiwan, Korea and Hong Kong lately. You could say that the cost of living is taking a toll on every market and Asia is no exception. However, the price-sensitive value-seeking shoppers in Asia would always say that things are expensive. So at the end of the day, brands just need to find the right partner who sees the gap in the market. Having said that, I always found it relatively straightforward to talk to brands with export potential if they can answer confidently the five questions below: 1. Have you exported to any markets outside your home market? 2. Have you attended overseas trade shows before? 3. Are you an export manager or a founder/decision-maker in the business? 4. Do you have a budget set aside for overseas expansion or willing to invest in promotional funding (as is the typical requirement for Asian importers)? 5. Which markets/regions are you interested in exploring first and why? I understand that brands want to grow and win additional revenue streams. But too often I see brands with growing but not fully stabilised domestic business looking at exports a tad bit earlier than they should. It is important for me as their future export advisor to give honest feedback on whether they are ready and how they should prepare for that moment. I would say I'm too blunt when it comes to telling you the truth. Whether you are fit for export or not, I'm happy to give you feedback and, hopefully, win that incremental revenue growth (over a long time)! #asia #export

If you want to make it in China, there are 3 key things that you'll need to succeed. In such a competitive market, being "unique" simply isn't enough. Because no matter how "unique" you think you are, if you do manage to succeed, it won't be long before others are copying your product. It's just not enough on it's own... BUT, if you've got one of these three key elements combined with an interesting product, your odds of success increase DRAMATICALLY. So, what are the game changers?
