For instance, commitments to free trade can restrict a government's ability to impose tariffs or subsidies that protect local industries. The trade-off between gaining economic advantages and losing sovereignty is a critical consideration for policymakers

It's certain that no country can halt trade and its related flows, even when artificial barriers are erected to shield domestic industries. Historically, companies / traders have adeptly circumvented regulations, and they'll persist in doing so in the future. Regarding subsidies and tariffs, countries will persist in pursuing their domestic objectives vigorously. At times, they may garner support, while at other times, negotiations may stall without resolution. #Trade #WTO #Subsidies #TradeBarriers #Laws https://lnkd.in/dsys-ur5

We recently organized an engaging session on 'Geopolitics & the State of Trade' at KPMG's Lakehouse. We extend our gratitude to Zack Cooper from Armitage International for delivering a comprehensive analysis of the current trade landscape. Specifically, during the session, we explored various administrations' perspectives on trade policy and potential day 1 actions. A few key takeaways included: •Trump Administration: Potential for increased tariffs on China, immediate tariff measures on Europe, and efforts to bolster the USMCA agreement. •Harris Administration: Continue tough, targeted measures on China, unlikely to turn attention onto Europe, criticism of the USMCA, and pursuit of new trade agreements with Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific. The session offered valuable insights into how these policies could impact businesses and the broader trade environment. Stay tuned for more for more insights! Feel free to reach out to our team with any questions! 📊 #KPMGTC #KPMGTradeCustoms #KPMGGlobalTrade #TradeAndCustoms #GlobalTrade #Geopolitics #TradeAgreements 🌍📈📊
