Circular Economy and the Arts Sustainability is a buzzword often discussed today. But have you ever heard of an artwork made from car bonnets? In a collaboration between Art Pharmacy Charter Hall, Cox Architecture and Armitage Jones, five significant artworks were commissioned for 555 Collins Street in Melbourne's CBD. These artworks, ranging from sculpture and textile to digital art, transformed the newly developed site into a reflection of Melbourne's vibrant culture and its emerging lifestyle precinct, Midtown. One of the curated pieces was a feature ceiling installation by local Melbourne designer and artist Jonathan Ben-Tovim. It was a new iteration of his iconic “Crash Series” that transforms car bonnets recovered from car wreckages into lighting installations. Ben-Tovim's experimental lighting and furniture design practice, based in the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne, explores the intricacies of the global industrial economy. His designs aim to question materials, processes, and supply chains implicated in delivering commercially mass-produced goods to uncover counter-narratives. Jonathan Ben-Tovim’s Cloud Vortex, showcased at 555 Collins Street, takes inspiration from nature and Melbourne's often windy and blustering weather. It is a surreal vortex of repurposed car bonnets arranged dynamically to create different compositions depending on the viewing angle. From the ground floor looking directly up, the work appears like a flat spiral, while from an elevated perspective, the three-dimensional space forms a Cloud Vortex that takes flight. An increasing interest in sustainable and circular art emphasises art's critical role in promoting sustainability and changing perceptions of waste. "Matter is one of the key elements of the process, first creative and then manufacturing. of industrial design. Matter, which then becomes material. Although, in this case, we should say materials, in plural, because the world of Broadview Holding, of which FENIX® is part, includes a galaxy of surfaces such as Arpa®, Formica® and Homapal®, which we wanted in dialogue through this project. Materials that are invented, patented, and applied in a virtuous chain that unites the researcher to the designer, the entrepreneur to the architect, and so on. The matter is, first and foremost, human. This is why we wanted to increase the synapses within the project by putting many brains (and many hands) into this careful consideration. Design Duo Double Feature, therefore, wants to explore the complexity of the interaction between a company and its different creatures (as well as brands!) and a selection of creative couples. It is a sort of style exercise to multiply ideas but also to give value to the complex art of dialogue and mediation, necessary in a creative couple, whether it is only in professional life or also in private, it doesn't matter, to summarise, in a design solution, the inputs of two different minds. Design Duo Double Feature opens scenarios where FENIX® is bent, milled, paired and transformed, occupying the space with a different physical presence thanks to the dialogue with other group materials. By acting as a grounding "augmented reality", the exhibition setup becomes architecture, expanding the showroom outside its usual space, while the surfaces abandon their two-dimensionality to be worked exponentially."
