Negotiations begin today in Cali, as world leaders convene at CBD #COP16Colombia. Amid high expectations for countries to deliver on the Global Biodiversity Framework commitments, the spotlight is on national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs). CBD parties are in the process of updating these critical plans to ensure they effectively reflect the goals and principles of the framework. Resource mobilization is also set to be a key focus, with the biodiversity funding mechanism and options for monitoring progress at the centre of discussions. Parties are also expected to agree on how to operationalize a multilateral mechanism for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources, ensuring the well-being of those who protect them. IISD will be on the ground, tracking negotiations and delivering daily reports on the key discussions and decisions driving global action on nature. Follow events here: https://lnkd.in/e5E9kFc3

🐳 Today on #BiodiversityDay, Women4Biodiversity's Director, Mrinalini Rai, shares six key actions for successfully implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) or the #BiodiversityPlan. 1️⃣ National and regional policies must integrate the KMGBF targets, ensuring that legal frameworks support biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. 2️⃣ Adequate resources must be allocated to support capacity building at all levels, especially for women and marginalized communities. 3️⃣ Robust monitoring and reporting frameworks to track progress towards the KMGBF targets must be established. 4️⃣ Encourage active participation from the whole of society from Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities, youth and especially women to make them #partoftheplan. 5️⃣ Forge collaborative efforts between the Rio Conventions and other biodiversity-related Multilateral Environment Agreements including governments, non-governmental organizations, and international bodies. 6️⃣ Eliminate barriers to women's participation in biodiversity conservation, support women-led projects, and integrate gender perspectives into all aspects of biodiversity planning and implementation. 📺 Watch now: https://lnkd.in/dig77SR2 Happy Biodiversity Day! To ensure accountable action #ForNature, policymakers need to know where, how and why previous commitments did not succeed. UNEP-WCMC researchers conducted a high-level analysis of countries’ policy pledges for nature and subsequent reporting of actions taken under the Aichi biodiversity targets. 📊🌿 The study reveals that nearly half of traceable commitments from NBSAPs could not be linked to evidence of actions undertaken, further highlighting the need for a clear, standardised process to ensure robust national monitoring of actions under the #BiodiversityPlan and for commitments made to now be translated into actions. #COP16Colombia: Integrating wetlands into NBSAPs, with clear targets and actions, is essential. National actions by Contracting Parties are crucial for effective collaboration across conventions in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. UN Biodiversity decisions recognize that effective implementation of the #KMGBF is dependent on leveraging the biodiversity-related conventions, including their science, data and reporting processes as well as existing tools and guidance. #PeaceWithNature #WetlandsMatter

The 2024 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) is here where countries that have signed the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the international agreement for conserving biodiversity will convene. Held every two years, the conference aims for a future where “humans live in harmony with nature by 2050.” This year’s #COP16 will work to translate the commitments of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) into actionable plans by involving diverse stakeholders, including indigenous communities and the private sector. Read this article to explore the history of the CBD and what lies ahead for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including initiatives like 30x30 and a new program focused on Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs): https://lnkd.in/g9-xVZnp

At Ecosystem Care we are proud to be supporting The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) ahead of its launch at the upcoming COP16 in Colombia. TGBS is an international, site-based standard that recognises and promotes the protection, enhancement, and restoration of biodiversity across various land uses and sectors. With over 100 NGOs, academics, and organisations backing this effort, TGBS aims to address the alarming decline in biodiversity and hold projects accountable for their ecological impacts. We are proud to be part of this remarkable collaboration led by @BGCI and supported by @ICUN, @UniversityofCambridge, @WildlifeConservationTrust, @UniversityofSao Paulo, and @University of Pennsylvania, all dedicated to addressing biodiversity loss and advancing the implementation of this essential standard. Together, we can create meaningful change for our planet. #TheGlobalBiodiversityStandard #TGBS #Biodiversity #BiodivserityCrisis #BiodiversityRestoration #COP16 LINK: https://lnkd.in/eUbFBHca
