Toastmasters contest season is really heating up now. Now in my last couple weeks of prep for the Scottish Championships on 20th April. One of these contests is the evaluation contest, and as I've been practicing my evaluations at different clubs over the last couple of months, I've had a few people ask about my approach. I'd say there are some basic foundations that most evaluators need to get in play first, before looking at some more advanced skills. 1) Evaluate, don't describe I see so many evaluations that are just "Cliffe notes" for the speech we heard. We just sat and listened to the speech, we don't need you to tell us WHAT happened again. Tell us WHY it was effective, or HOW it can be improved. 2) Not offering suggestions for improvement What's the purpose of an evaluation? It's to help the audience improve as speakers (not just the speaker themselves). So how can the audience improve if you don't offer a single suggestion for improvement? Even "I Have A Dream" could be improved (There was no need for Martin to be standing behind that podium, he knew what he was saying without needing notes. Speaking of which...). 3) Using Notes At the division and even district contests, I still see about half the contestants using notes. When you use notes, it stunts your fluency (looking down and checking your next point), your voice (your "reading voice" gets activated instead of your "speaking voice") and your body language becomes muted (you can't demonstrate and emphasise your points so well whilst grasping a piece of paper). Train yourself at club meetings to deliver your evaluations without notes, so that it is second nature come contest time. You can see these points in action in my winning evaluation from last year. It's a short watch (you get disqualified if you speak over 3:30). #toastmasters #toastmasterscontest #speechevaluationscontest

Misinformation needs amplification from a semi-reputable dance partner, which creates complications for the media. Outlets often have a hard time deciding what to cover, when to do it, and how to explain it. It's all, in some manner, subjective, and current times are as murky as ever. Is being on-site playing into the misinformation campaign? Is NOT going sticking to proper ethics? How do you present what you see to readers if you decide to attend an event designed to obfuscate? Here, Les Carpenter went to a press conference, then delivered exactly what you expect from a good journalist at a sham event. Get out of the way. Let the facts speak. Deliver clarity without opinion. https://lnkd.in/edf26bxV
