What emerges from the African Youth Survey 2024 is that the youth are at a crossroads—optimistic and energized about their future; they want to improve their quality of life, their environment, build robust businesses, and build a stronger continent for the future. ...yet they are hindered & increasingly frustrated by barriers that stop them, calling for more responsive governance, greater economic opportunities, action on climate change, and stronger protections against misinformation. Our survey reveals that 64% of youth are not opposed to non-peaceful protests to effect political change & to break down barriers. It’s clear that if their governments can't sort out these issues, 31% of youth are prepared to leave Africa permanently. 'A Turning Point for Africa' is the title of the African Youth Survey 2024. You can read the full report by visiting our website here: https://lnkd.in/dWupedxS --- Conceptualized and funded by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation. Conducted by PSB Insights, a global leader in public opinion research, to-date there is no comparable barometer of the opinions of African youth in size or scope - The African Youth Survey is widely recognized as one of the most important research studies on young people living, learning, and working across Africa. #AfricanYouthSurvey24 #Governance #Africa #AfricanYouth

What do we know about the public opinion in Africa after 25 years? "One of the Afrobarometer’s greatest contributions has been to enhance our understanding of ethnicity. It has been clear that politicised ethnic identities are not primordial and stable for many years. But the data collected by the Afrobarometer has broken new ground by revealing just how malleable identities can be, and how quickly they can be re-shaped. One of my favourite pieces of research used an innovative approach to look at how respondents’ feelings about their main identity – ethnic, national or class – change. The Afrobarometer asks respondents whether they feel their ethnic, national or class (occupation) identity most strongly. By looking at how answers to this question change when surveys are held closer to an election, Benn Eifert, Edward Miguel and Daniel Posner were able to test how political campaigns shift the way citizens feel." https://lnkd.in/gm_R9hWW

#GraphOfTheWeek: 30 Years After End of Apartheid – Inequality Persists. April 27 is Freedom Day in South Africa, commemorating the end of the Apartheid regime and the country’s first free and fair elections held on this date in 1994. This week’s graph shows the Equal distribution of resources index for South Africa from 1990 to today, which captures dimensions of both economic and social inequality, with the Liberal Democracy Index as a reference. The end of Apartheid meant a sudden and significant improvement in civil and political rights for millions of non-white South Africans. In the 30 years since then, however, South Africa has continuously been marked by high levels of inequality and the absence of further substantial improvements in many aspects of public life such as income, wealth, education and health. Social and economic inequality are not only an issue in and off themselves but can also translate into political inequality by limiting individuals’ fulfillment of formally granted civil and political rights – which is especially relevant with elections for South Africa’s National Assembly scheduled for May 29 of this year. Tinashe Ngirandi on Public Policies in Africa: Time for African Presidents to have Special Youth Advisors/Envoys - The Kenyan Gen Z Demonstration as a Case Study FULL ARTICLE ON FACEBOOK - this is just a paraphrasing. Africa's youth population is the world's largest, presenting immense potential. Yet, many African governments struggle to engage this demographic. The recent Gen Z protests in Kenya highlight the growing disconnect between young Africans and their political leadership. Countries like Rwanda have leveraged youth talent, but most nations fail to forge meaningful connections. Youth often feel alienated from government priorities and decision-making. Ministries for youth lack the resources and influence to align policies with youth needs. I believe African presidents should establish dedicated youth advisory roles in their offices. This would provide real-time insights into youth concerns and ensure their perspectives are integrated into policymaking. The Kenyan protests underscore the urgent need for this mechanism to bridge the elite-youth divide. Presidential youth advisors could harness Africa's youthful potential as agents of positive change. Countries like Rwanda, which have embraced this model, have seen enhanced youth engagement and more responsive governance. This should be a priority for African leaders.

Today the The World Bank will launch the “Pathways to Prosperity for Adolescent Girls in Africa Report”. The launch will cover a groundbreaking discussion on empowering Africa's adolescent girls, based on the new report—a collaboration between the Centre for Global Development, the Population Council, and the World Bank Group. The report highlights the transformative role adolescent girls play in Africa's economic development and offers critical insights and recommendations to address the gender-specific challenges they face, emphasizing how investments in girls' education, health, and economic opportunities can unlock substantial benefits for individuals and economies alike. We can learn how strategic investments in girls' empowerment can drive significant economic growth, with potential returns exceeding ten times the initial investment. This launch is partcicularly important because it comes on the eve of the global worldwide campaign of 16 days of activism, which commences on 25 November, to oppose violence against women and children. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse against women and children and to rid society of abuse permanently. @centreforglobaldevelopment The World Bank Population Council https://lnkd.in/dH9SVcFJ

Data for advocacy and citizen engagement is crucial for development. The youth are the next frontiers for the true African Renaissance as they push for more accountability and transparency of political officeholders. Nigerian data enthusiasts, your move... #datafordevelopment According to Dr. Oby, The young Kenyans are not joking at all. Following on the heels of Senegal, impressive Data-backed online and on-the-ground advocacy for Good Governance at its best is growing among the young of Africa. Someday in History, the events in Senegal, Kenya and elsewhere will be narrated as the 3rd wave of Political Independence of African countries. First, The Silent Generation ( the ones before us) got independence from the colonial governments. Second, our own Generation- Baby Boom Generation and the GenX got freedom from Military and Civilian Dictatorships. Now the Millennials and GenZs of Africa are confronting their Domestic Colonialists by securing freedom from an entrenched political class and their decadent political culture that subverts and subordinates the Common Good of countries, thereby consigning the young to a bleak Future. Interesting days ahead….. ✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾 Credits: Dr. Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili

Thrilled to share that I'll be joining an insightful Instagram Live panel discussion on regime change in Africa, with a special focus on the pivotal role of the youth! The discussion on regime change in Africa, particularly with a focus on youth involvement, is incredibly timely and important. With elections happening across the continent, it's crucial to examine the role young people play in shaping Africa's future. The Arab Spring, which was largely led by youth, is a powerful example of how young people can drive change. The Arab Spring protests, which began in 2010, demonstrated the potential for youth-led movements to challenge entrenched authoritarian regimes. In countries like Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, young people utilized social media and other digital tools to mobilize and organize protests, often at great personal risk. This phenomenon highlights the importance of considering the perspectives and experiences of young people in discussions around regime change. As Africa navigates its own set of challenges, including elections, economic growth, and demographic shifts, the role of youth in regime change cannot be overstated. With over 70% of Africa's population under the age of 30, young people are poised to shape the continent's future. Date: 13 November 2024 Time: 7pm Platform: Project YouthSA Instagram page The impact of youth activism on African politics Strategies for effective regime change Lessons from successful youth-led movements Challenges and opportunities ahead. Join us live and be part of the conversation! As an academic, I'm passionate about empowering Africa's youth to drive positive change. #HappyAfricanYouthDay to the vibrant, resilient youth of our continent! I’m speaking to all young Africans who feel the weight of decisions made for them, but too rarely with them. We’re often told that policies are being built for the future — yet, the voices shaping these policies are from leaders near retirement, planning a vision we’ll inherit long after they’re gone. We, the youth, deserve a place at the decision-making tables now, not as distant beneficiaries but as active architects of the future. Agenda 2063 is not just a blueprint, it’s our reality in the making. We are the present and future of Africa. We should be steering the vision that will impact our lives, our communities, and our children. It’s time for our involvement, for our energy to breathe life into policies and make them relevant from the grassroots up. I hope we witness more doors flung open for young African voices — not merely in words, but through true opportunity and responsibility. I hope to see an Africa where we no longer lose lives to the desperation of migration or the devastation of conflict. Let our leaders invest genuinely in US and in PEACE, to give this continent’s youth a reason to stay, to hope, and to build. To all young Africans, let’s keep pushing. The time is now; let’s take our rightful place.
