To close out Day 1 of Octane’s Medical Innovation Forum, our “Innovations and Impact: The Neurovascular Frontier in Orange County” panel highlighted the convergence of neurovascular and neuroscience advancements right here in Southern California. With expert insights from Mark Dickinson, World Wide President Neurovascular at Johnson & Johnson MedTech; Jag Dosanjh, President Neurosciences & Eye, SVP at AbbVie; and Azadeh Nasibi, Vice President of Business Development at Medtronic’s Neurovascular Operating Unit, the discussion explored how collaborative efforts in Orange County are accelerating breakthroughs to address complex neurological conditions. Moderated by Khurram Mir, Director of Innovation at UCI Health, the panel emphasized the significance of Orange County as a thriving hub for neruo innovation. Dickinson discussed the critical role of nurturing local talent and creating a collaborative ecosystem, while Dosanjh highlighted how forums like these foster connections between scientists, investors, and startups to propel innovation forward. Nasibi emphasized the substantial opportunities for stakeholders to advance treatments, particularly with approved therapies that are still underutilized. This panel offered a preview of what’s to come at the Neuro Tech Forum in April 2024, setting the stage for Orange County as a global leader in neurovascular and neuroscience innovation. The energy of investment and innovation was alive and well in Dana Point yesterday at the LSI Emerging Medtech Summit. With a slow return to a more normal flow of deals, a result of $1.2 Trillion in equity available and the 8% profitability growth of market leaders in our segment. This increasing availability of cash and M&A, combined with the innovations being unleashed in Neurology, connectivity, and AI, is creating palpable energy at this meeting. Innovators listening to the advice of Neil Shah and Raymond Cohen, whose successful exits are what all of these innovators are working hard to create. A key takeaway for me is that the expansion of Catheter-based Neurosurgery means that neurology is poised for an explosion of innovation, just like Cardiology and Vascular have been in the last couple of decades. #LSI24

Phakic Intraocular Lenses (Phakic IOLs) are specialized lenses implanted in the eye to correct vision in individuals with extremely high refractive errors, thin cornea, particularly those who are not ideal candidates for laser eye surgeries like LASIK or PRK. Unlike standard intraocular lenses used after cataract surgery, phakic IOLs are placed in eyes that still have their natural lenses (hence the term "phakic," which refers to the presence of the natural lens). Procedure: - Phakic IOL implantation is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. - A small incision is made in the cornea to insert the lens, which is folded and then unfolded inside the eye. - It is a reversible procedure, meaning the lens can be removed or replaced if needed. Advantages: - Reversibility: Unlike LASIK, which permanently reshapes the cornea, phakic IOLs can be removed or exchanged if necessary. -Preservation of the cornea: The cornea is left untouched, which is beneficial for patients with thin or irregular corneas. Typical kind of AI and Healthcare tech than can greatly benefit Low/Middle Income countries! Get a diagnosis for chronic respiratory disease at home, on your phone. Great potential for the Pneumoscope or as the team coins it, "Shazam of lungs". The solution includes a digital stethoscope and a classification algorithm for disease diagnosis and management - DeepBreath. External validation is made on data coming from #Senegal #Cameroon and #Morocco. Results are not matching performance of the internal dataset, I guess this news will help close the gap!
