Now's the time to GiveBig to adult learners. Textbooks are vital for students in their education, but we know these textbooks represent even more to students. They represent independence, stability, and belonging.Your donation deeply impacts Literacy Source students. Help us raise $4,000 for student textbooks. $20 provides a textbook for one student for one quarter. $80 provides a textbook for one student for one year. $400 provides textbooks for an entire class for one quarter. $1,600 provides textbooks for an entire class for one year. Friends and Colleagues, The holidays are a time for giving. I ask that you consider donating to this wonderful organization that makes quality STEM educational opportunities available to minority and at-risk youth in the Mt. Vernon New York area, a predominantly minority community. We have an education deficit in our country, particularly in key subjects such as science, maths, engineering and technology, subjects which are critical to developing the skill sets necessary to perform many of the jobs available in the present and future economy. Due to underfunded and overstretched school systems and other factors, children in historically socioeconomically depressed areas such as Mt. Vernon often lack access to meaningful STEM educational opportunities to gain the skills they will need to be productive employees and members of society when they reach adulthood, which often results in them going down the wrong path and deprives our economy and society of capable workers. When they are unable to access quality STEM education through their school, children who are genuinely interested in learning about STEM subjects look elsewhere but often lack the financial resources to participate in private programs. Northeast STEM Starter Academy (NSSA) rectifies this by making STEM programming available to these kids and fostering their interest in these subjects. Children that come through the program often go on to obtain scholarships and attend university and participate in internship programs as they pursue their passions and careers. For example, a recent NSSA student completed her degree at a prestigious university and secured employment with a laboratory in which she interned while in school. NSSA is there for the kids who want to learn, and the kids and our society as a whole benefit from it. These children are America’s future, and properly educated, they will provide the human capital needed to power America’s economy tomorrow. This is my first give to the max day as a board member for Breakthrough Twin Cities. If you are looking for a great cause to donate to this time of year, I'd encourage you to consider BTC! Our goal at Breakthrough Twin Cities is to support students on their path to college AND cultivate the next generation of future educators. And we've been successful this past year: -We are currently serving 657 students – which is nearly 100 more students than last year! -For the Class of 2024, 100% of students who applied were accepted to college (compared to the 69% state average) -The average annual scholarship awarded to a BTC graduate was $44,818 -The average Breakthrough student had 91% of all college costs covered by scholarships and grants -70% of the 2024 Teaching Fellow cohort identified as people of color (compared to the 5.9% of teachers in MN) -98% of Teaching Fellows reported improvement in their teaching skills We can't do this work alone.
