The current Feasibility Fund call from IBioIC could be an excellent opportunity for anyone who's been to one of our events to progress any discussions you've been having with partners to Proof of Concept project stage. We'd particularly draw your attention to the eligibility of projects around textiles, food production, and creating value from waste. Applications are welcomed until 5 June 2024, so there's plenty of time to crystalise your ideas, and you can always reach out to the BCB's IBioIC lead, Kim Cameron, for guidance and advice. IBioIC is inviting applications for industry-led collaborative research projects from businesses with a foothold in Scotland or those who could deliver inward investment to help stimulate Scotland’s economy. Successful projects will demonstrate a proof of concept for a product, process or service with the potential to deliver jobs and/or economic growth to Scotland. Projects must demonstrate a route to follow on funding or commercial application and must evidence collaborative knowledge exchange and research between Industrial Partners and at least one of Scotland’s talented Higher Education Institutes’ (HEI) research teams. Up to £30,000 is available per project at 80% fEC. This must be matched by in kind or cash contributions from the industry partner. Wonderful to see the Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP team recently visiting the iFAB Tech Hub and Integrated Bioprocessing Research Laboratory (IBRL) to witness firsthand how the growing bionmanufacturing ecosystem in Illinois is taking shape. SCSP’s Karina Barao and Abigail Kukura, along with Advisor Michael Kuiken, explored how the region is leveraging its natural resource advantages, advanced infrastructure, and public-private partnerships to drive U.S. leadership in precision fermentation—a massive opportunity to reshape industries like food, medicine, and materials that, in a report with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) earlier this year, our team estimates to be a ~$200 billion market. We applaud SCSP’s work to strengthen America’s competitiveness in emerging technologies and are excited to be part of the iFAB Tech Hub making Illinois an emerging hub for innovation and scale-up in the bioeconomy. I'm delighted to share our latest publication, "A hybrid strategy for growth-associated production of sophorolipid using a reconstructed genome-scale metabolic model for the fructophilic yeast Starmerella bombicola," now available in Process Safety and Environmental Protection. Our study presents the first genome-scale metabolic model for Starmerella bombicola, a yeast known for its ability to produce sophorolipids, valuable biosurfactants with numerous industrial applications. We explored a hybrid strategy that couples sophorolipid production with yeast growth, optimizing for both.
