As Trade Associations go, we may be small, but we are mighty, and together, we’ve achieved significant milestones across our four key pillars: 📈INFLUENCE: We have seen Minister Vallance, publicly state that #biobased and #biodegradable solutions are vital for a #sustainable future, showcasing the strength of our shared #advocacy. 🔬INNOVATE: We secured £550,000 of Innovate UK funding for our Regulatory Science and Innovation Network (BB-REG-NET) to generate evidence to facilitate sound and transparent regulatory decision-making, advancing the bio-based, biodegradable and #compostable sector. 🫂CONNECT: This year our membership has over doubled, demonstrating the growing impact of bio-based and biodegradable solutions. 🗣️COMMUNICATE: We have simplified our key messages and asks of government and were excited to have a BBIA opinion piece featuring John Gummer, Rt Hon The Lord Deben published in the The Independent. These successes are a testament to the power of unity and the invaluable contributions each of our members bring to our shared vision for a more sustainable future, where the UK is a global leader in developing, manufacturing, using and exporting bio-based and biodegradable solutions. AORA and the Australasian Bioplastics Association are hosting a webinar “Dispelling the myths about certified compostable products” Delivered by Bill Grant, an agricultural and environmental scientist with extensive experience in organic resource recovery, compost and soil science and agronomy. Bill was commissioned by the Australasian Bioplastics Association in mid 2024 to undertake an independent assessment of the risks and benefits of certified compost products in food organics & garden organics (FOGO) recovery systems in Australia. This webinar will focus on the outcomes of this assessment including; - The role of certified compostable products in the Circular Economy - The importance of science based decision making in order to dispel the myths and risks - Barriers to recovery of urban/municipal organic resources. The BB-Materials sector is nascent, meaning large databases of scientific evidence are not always available. However, evidence-informed policymaking should not be at odds with innovation. For BB-Materials, where evidence is limited, it is essential to assess current efforts, explore novel ways to realise the benefits, and pilot new policies – in turn generating evidence for future policy decisions. 📰 Our latest News Review covering updates from across the #biobased #products sector is now available. 🌍 📜 The Joint Research Centre of EU Commission has recently published ‘Trends in the Bioeconomy’ which provides insights into the progress towards a sustainable bioeconomy and the state of national and regional strategies in EU Member States. This was made possible by the EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System (EU-BMS) which tracks progress towards multiple objectives, including food security, sustainable management of resources as well as mitigating use of non-renewable resources. EU-BMS is managed and further developed by the Knowledge Centre for Bioeconomy (KCB). ✍ 📰 The report indicates the importance of biobased plastics and underlines that these are addressed in all the national bioeconomy strategies examined. Furthermore, it points out that biobased plastics are included in the sectors with the highest increase in Gross Value Added (GVA), experiencing a positive change of 6% within the last decade. Lastly, the policy section of the report argues that the ‘EU policy framework on biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics’ calls on fresh policy initiatives that take a more systemic perspective. 💊 ⚕️Stories relating to the commercial development of biobased plastics include a multi-year collaboration fostered between the Dutch Avantium N.V. and Thai SCGC - SCG Chemicals to pilot the production of Polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), a biodegradable, recyclable polyester. The partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of Avantium's innovative technologies in Southeast Asia, fostering the growth of sustainable materials and contributing to a circular economy. The collaboration will also allow Avantium to negotiate license deals to utilize its Volta Technology. 💚💚Today we are celebrating world soil day, and the importance of heathy soils💚💚 🪴🪴Soil is one of the most critical components of Earth's ecosystem, providing numerous essential functions that sustain life🪴🪴 💚95% of our food comes from soils. 💚33% of soils are degraded world-wide. 💚It can take up to 1000 years to produce just 2-3 cm of soil. 💚Soils supply 15 of the 18 naturally occurring chemical elements essential to plants. 💚There are more living organisms in a tablespoon of soil than people on Earth. 💚Over the last 70 years, the level of vitamins and nutrients in food has drastically decreased. 💚Two billion people worldwide suffer from lack of micronutrients, known as hidden hunger. 💚Agricultural production will have to increase by 60% to meet the global food demand in 2050. 💚Up to 58% more food could be produced through sustainable soil management. 💚Up to half of our household waste could be composted to nurture our soil.

Realisation of this potential across sectors as diverse as #health, #energy, #materials, #chemicals production and #waste management, will be achieved by providing the right tools to help companies of all sizes as they innovate and translate those innovations to commercial production scale. 🌳🌳I really enjoyed the session on biomass feedstock sustainability. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology recently asked the UK public about five applications of engineering biology: 👩⚕️Healthcare 👩🌾Agriculture and Food Growth ⛽Low Carbon Fuels ♻️Recycling Natural Waste 🧪New Chemicals and Materials We need to do better at helping the general public understand the role that #engineeringbiology can play in the future of a healthy and #sustainable #planet. 🧬A sizeable majority of respondents feel comfortable about using new and emerging technologies on a day-to-day basis, but relatively few can offer even a partial explanation of what engineering biology is. 🧬Though only a minority of respondents had previously heard of the use of engineering biology across the different applications tested, there is a near-overwhelming belief that such applications would be useful. 🧬Similarly, large majorities are comfortable with each of the specific applications and believe that they will generally be a positive thing for society. 🧬There is also a widely-held belief that engineering biology will have a positive impact on science overall over the next ten years. 🧬When it comes to the various possible applications of engineering biology, the top priority for respondents is that it would be verified as safe for consumption and use – and this was true in all examples that were tested. 🧬Researching a range of different statements shows strong agreement that transparency is important and that it should be made clear when engineering biology is used. 🧬There is also agreement that not enough is currently known about engineering biology and that more information should be provided to the public. 🧬Though it is broadly agreed that the government is well placed to make decisions about the use of engineering biology, there is also agreement that the public should be involved in those decisions too. 🧬Throughout the survey, there were, generally speaking, few meaningful differences between the results of men compared to women. With the Simpler Recycling reforms around the corner, stories like this from Swindon illustrate what can be achieved through weekly food waste collections. By collecting food waste weekly, you will be decreasing the amount of waste going to incineration or landfill, but also will be helping to produce organic fertilisers as the food waste ends up either at a composting site or an AD site. Love to see this and hopefully there is more to come from this in the coming years! https://lnkd.in/e7PGZs9v
