📢📢📢It gives us pleasure to announce that "MODULAR COMPONENTS OF INTEGRATED LOCAL ENERGY SYSTEMS", a socio-technical compendium of fact sheets on how to 'do' local energy transition, has been just released by SERENE H2020 project 👇🏡🔌🙋♂️🙋♀️🌞 "(...)As a result of the experiences gained at the #demonstrationsites, before you lies a compendium of technical, social and organizational components for #localenergysystems as we researched and applied them in our project. The purpose of this compendium is for you, interested and engaged #citizens, to see possibilities and discuss among each other how a sustainable local energy system could look in your place. The compendium is not meant as a one-sizefits-all solution to make local energy systems sustainable. You are always tied to the current legal, political, social, and economic situation. So, not all components might make sense in your case. Furthermore, the components should be seen as exemplary. Some of them are already operable, others are still under development. They are supposed to trigger your imagination about what the starting points are in your concrete situation. The authors are always happy to interact and discuss (...)" 📌IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya showcases the CELLCO2 project at DEMODAY 2021 The closing ceremony of the producte AGAUR . projects, the DEMODAY 2021, took place on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024. Among the highlights of the event was the presentation of the #CELLCO2 project by IREC. Selected as one of the eight standout projects from a pool of over 40, the CELLCO2 project was driven by Nina M Carretero, who pitched the project to a distinguished audience comprising real investors and political representatives. Carretero showcased the remarkable progress made by the project over the past 1.5 years, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards commercialization. At its core, the CELLCO2 project aimed to develop and scale-up an electrochemical cell for CO2 reduction, with a target size of 500 cm2 capable of converting up to 2500 L of CO2 per day, ultimately achieving Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL4). Notably, the prototype successfully attained TRL4, a validation currently undergoing optimization and validation processes. Looking ahead, the team will focus on crafting a robust business plan and exploitation strategy, leveraging insights gained from entrepreneurship courses provided by TopBrands®Consulting. The significance of the CELLCO2 project extends beyond technological innovation. With the increasing need for regulatory compliance to reduce CO2 emissions and advance towards NET ZERO 2050 goals, new market opportunities will emerge. The project aligns with this imperative, offering a sustainable solution to mitigate millions of tons of CO2 emissions annually while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The team behind the success of the CELLCO2 project comprises Nina M Carretero, Jesús Diaz Del Campo Ruiz, Andrés A. García Blanco, and Sebastián Murcia López from the Energy Storage, Harvesting, and Catalysis group at IREC. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dkhUyqpj Funding: Departament de Recerca i Universitats de la Generalitat de Catalunya #IRECprojects. It was a pleasure to attend the IRTC | International Round Table on Materials Criticality conference last week at Politecnico di Torino. The organisation of the event was great, like the previous year, with high-quality inputs from academics, industry players and policymakers on natural resource issues and global value chain co-dependencies that must be considered in the renewable energy and digital transition in a complex geopolitical landscape. I was particularly happy to note that the discussion on resource security was complemented with important considerations related to sustainability challenges, such as the social impacts of mineral extraction and material demand reduction through circular business model innovation, product repair and behavioural change. Contributing to this debate, together with Samuel Carrara, we presented a recent study of the Joint Research Centre of the EU commission on “Circular Economy Research and Innovation (R&I) intensity for critical products in the supply chains of strategic technologies". The analysis focuses on lithium-ion cells, neodymium iron boron permanent magnets, photovoltaic cells, electrolyzers and fuel cells. These products are essential to manufacture batteries, hydrogen technologies, wind turbines, traction motors, solar panels, heat pumps, data transmission networks, data storage and servers, smartphones, tablets and laptops, robotics, drones, space launchers and satellites. As specified by the Critical Raw Materials Act, achieving circularity for these technologies and embedded materials is essential to enable Europe meeting its 2030 climate and digital objectives. The main insights from the study are visualised in the figure below, and summarised as follows: 1) Circularity R&I for critical products is not balanced, with a prominent focus placed on lithium-ion cells on a global level. 2) The EU has followed this trend in terms of number of innovation projects and public spending. 3) Next to EU efforts, China and the USA focus intensely on circular economy R&I as well. For those interested in the subject, the full report can be downloaded at this link: https://lnkd.in/dXAyxQbQ #circulareconomy #sustainability #renewableenergy #digitaltransition #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #criticalrawmaterials #eupolicy #researchandinnovation #lithiumbattery #lithiumionbatteries #neodymium #electricmotors #electricmobility #windenergy #windturbines #pvpanels #solarpanels #hydrogenenergy #fuelcelltechnology #electrolysers #circularbusiness #businessmodelinnovation #businessmodels
