World YMCA Accelerator Summit, Mombasa: An insightful conversation with Caroline Khamati, Director International Labour Organization on creating employability for young people who have dropped out of school. This requires a holistic approach that addresses their educational gaps, builds marketable skills and provides pathways to meaningful employment. 🌟Alternative Education Programs such as high School Equivalency Programs are required to support young people in earning Recognition of Prior Learning certificate, making them eligible for more job opportunities. Partnerships with educational institutions in bridging programs will aim to create alternative education routes that offer flexible learning schedules. 🌟With these strategies, we can help young people develop the skills and confidence they need to enter the workforce and succeed in their chosen paths amplifying impact. #Vision2030 #meaningfulwork

The day coincides with the birthdays of two significant Thai kings: 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐕 & 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐈𝐗, both champions of youth empowerment and education. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐨 𝐖𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲? This day is a reminder of the crucial role that youth play in society. It focuses on: * 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 to contribute to national development and social change. * 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 in building a stronger and more prosperous Thailand. * 𝑬𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 in areas such as politics, entrepreneurship, environmental conservation, and social work. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝? Across Thailand, various events and initiatives are organized to engage young people and celebrate their achievements:  1) 𝑬𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒔 & 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔: Schools and universities host activities that foster creativity, innovation, and leadership. 2) 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔 & 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔: Recognizing outstanding achievements in academics, sports, community service, and entrepreneurship.  3) 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒔: Encouraging youth to participate in community development, environmental conservation, and social outreach programs.  4) 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔: Platforms where young people can share ideas, collaborate, and discuss key issues affecting their future. "Is Malaysia's PLKN Program Effectively Fostering Patriotism and Unity Among Youth?" PLKN, or Program Latihan Khidmat Negara, is Malaysia's national service program aimed at instilling patriotism and unity among young citizens. It comprises a mandatory three-month training period for school leavers, focusing on physical fitness, citizenship education, and community service. Key issues 1. Effectiveness of PLKN: Assessing the program's impact on fostering patriotism and national unity among participants. 2. Program Structure: Evaluating the curriculum and training modules to ensure relevance and effectiveness. 3. Follow-up Initiatives: Addressing the lack of post-program support or continuation activities for participants. 4. Public Perception: Analyzing public opinions and attitudes towards PLKN, including concerns and criticisms. 5. Revival Challenges: Identifying obstacles and considerations for the successful revival and implementation of PLKN 3.0. The outlook for PLKN faces several challenges. These include assessing its effectiveness in fostering patriotism, addressing structural shortcomings, implementing follow-up initiatives, managing public perception, and overcoming obstacles in the revival of PLKN 3.0. "The vision of Singapore as a City of Good entails building a more caring society where people take action to make life better for all. While many individuals had indicated that they were likely to volunteer in the future, factors such as lack of time may pose barriers. How can we encourage people in Singapore to volunteer more actively?" This is the real-world problem statement that the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre is contributing to the Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE)'s new A-level Project Work H1 subject in schools this year through the PW Marketplace Of Ideas. Students who chose to tackle it gathered for a chat with our director of Strategy & Policy, Soek Mun Ng. In her session on Encouraging More Volunteerism, she held a Q&A and shared takeaways from our recently released National Giving Study 2023. Childhood exposure to giving, it found, makes people more likely to continue giving as adults. Welcome to ME & YOUth! Here, we’re on a mission to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the youth-at-risk in Singapore and empower university students to take action through volunteerism. Why focus on at-risk youth? In Singapore, concerns around youth-at-risk are rising. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Social and Family Development Eric Chua stated that approximately 17,000 young people have been identified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) and are at a risk of being excluded by society. Beyond that, other youths may face various risk factors below the surface, such as school struggles, family conflicts, and other behaviours. These risk factors and challenges are often hidden from society, making them vulnerable and lacking in further opportunities. The challenges faced by these youths are real, and the need for support is urgent. Hence we believe that… University students are uniquely positioned to help bridge this gap. By mentoring and volunteering, they can have a direct impact on the lives of the youth-at-risk, offering them the guidance and positive role models they need. Together, we can help these young people overcome challenges and create lasting change. Such an inspiring initiative by UNICEF, the Generation Future programme, which is making a significant impact in Stung Treng, Cambodia. Launched in 2021, this initiative nurtures youth-led projects, equipping students with vital skills in coding, digital design, and leadership. In rural areas like Stung Treng, educational opportunities can be limited, especially for girls. Traditional gender norms often restrict their academic and career choices. However, projects such as Code for Girls, Cyclo Day, RULErs, and MeaKea are breaking these barriers, providing students with the tools and confidence to pursue their dreams. UNICEF Cambodia’s Generation Future is about more than education—it's about empowering the next generation to lead their communities towards a brighter future, making sure no one is left behind in the digital age.
