Last week, I hosted SPCS Talk Vol. 11 with Corinne Julie of Nature Seychelles about natural resource co-management and the LEAP Project, supported by International Climate Initiative. Here's what I learned: 🤝 Trust is paramount. Building trust should inform every step of the process — and co-management is an ongoing process. This meant LEAP's team entering stakeholder assessments and educational initiatives from a place of humility and service, establishing mutually beneficial relationships with community members. 📝 Buy-in comes from understanding of benefits. One of LEAP's challenges was overcoming low awareness of the links between livelihood and environment. Therefore, the team had to engage citizens, local authorities, and others to demonstrate the power of co-management. 👭 Partnerships must span multiple levels. Especially for a farsighted project like LEAP, stakeholders shouldn't be completely grassroots or completely governmental. Rather, there should be a broad base of support to facilitate a wide range of initiatives in pursuit of ultimate objectives. ⌛ 16 days left until our BSSSC Annual Conference in Kiel! To give you an insight into what to expect, we asked Torsten Frey from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel three questions about the workshop "Next steps towards a munitions-free Baltic Sea". 💣   🗝️ What’s the key aspect of your workshop? In recent years, we have successfully taken the first steps towards the clearance of the dumped munitions in the Baltic Sea. Following this successful start, the question now arises as to what it will take to continue this success and transition clearance from small experimental efforts to scalable and economically viable solutions. Together with our partners from the Baltic Sea Region, we want to discuss and draw up strategies, technological solutions and aspects of financing to enable common and transnational action.   🌊 What makes your topic relevant and important for the Baltic Sea Region? The clearance of dumped munitions from the Baltic Sea is crucial for the region as these munitions pose significant environmental hazards due to leaking toxic substances that harm marine ecosystems and could potentially contaminate the food chain. By removing the dumped munitions, we ensure the safety and health of local communities. Additionally, we protect the economic interests tied to fishing, tourism, and the maritime industry as a whole.   🔭 What’s to be expected? We will first describe the problem and take a look at current projects and examples of ways to deal with dumped munitions. This way, our participants will be able to consider the most recent findings in the ongoing discussion about a environmentally friendly solutions. Furthermore, we will discuss how to deal with challenges of financing and the importance of regional cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region and in the European Union.   Want to know more? The 11th r3.0 International (online) Conference 'Tipping Points on Tipping Points - Building Necessary Collapse Resilience' on September 10/11 has four main themes, each with extraordinary speakers. The Fourth Session is focused on our signature issue of Thresholds & Allocations. Thresholds approximate where systems transgress their carrying capacities and so enter the danger zone where tipping points can be crossed at any moment, triggering systemic collapses. As Mark McElroy first established in his 2008 dissertation, carrying capacity transgressions apply not only to ecological system overshoot, but also social system undershoot (hence our use of the term "caring capacity".) Allocations require all actors to take accountability for their fair share responsibility of respecting systemic carrying capacities.
