LESSONS FROM HIKING THE LARAPINTA TRAIL Over the last fortnight my wife and I ticked off one of our bucket-list items. We hiked (part of) the Larapinta Trail. This demanding track starts in Alice Springs and goes for over 220km to the west – ending at Mt. Sonder. We did 150km in nine days as a kind of “best of…” The scenery is marvellous as you move slowly across the landscape. Red rocks everywhere and beautiful ridges – which you also need to traverse to get to the next campsite. We were seven hikers in total plus two guides providing us with food and encouragements. Two of our fellow hikers were badly prepared and not equipped for this strenuous adventure. They've either never done a multiday hike before or their shoes were not worn in. So that on day two they started to develop massive blisters and knee problems. Consequently, by day four or five we were down to five hikers! It is the same with your business processes… If your systems are in a bad state or your calculations are not equipped to do the work, you give up! You either end up with severe headaches and frustrations or you spend endless hours to get your numbers adding up. Don’t let your equipment let you down. Don’t let your systems ruin your day. **Schneider Hiking Adventures: Week 2 - Conquering The Wrekin in the Heat!** Week two of our hiking challenge took us up the mighty Wrekin, and this week, we were joined by a few more brave souls, bringing our total to a lucky 13. (Well, lucky for some – those who made it to the top without melting into a puddle of sweat, that is!) Standing tall at 407 meters (1,335 feet) above sea level, The Wrekin is arguably the crown jewel of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. The 360-degree views from the summit are nothing short of spectacular. On a clear day, you can see for miles, making the grueling climb almost worth it. Almost. Convincing everyone to embark on this sweaty adventure today took some serious persuading. Let’s be honest, hiking up a hill in sweltering heat isn't everyone’s idea of fun. But we were determined to conquer The Wrekin and, more importantly, beat last week's time. Spoiler alert: the heat was brutal, but our determination was even more intense. The first group hit the summit in a swift 35 minutes. Not too shabby, considering the conditions. The second group followed closely behind, clocking in at 41 minutes. Then, in a turn of events that can only be described as extraordinary (or perhaps just superhuman), the third team, who started a little later than the rest of us, made it to the top in a blistering 25 minutes. Finally, the last group crossed the finish line at 49 minutes, hot, exhausted, but exhilarated nonetheless. Despite the sticky, sweaty conditions, we all made it to the top and lived to tell the tale. We might have been dreaming of air conditioning and ice-cold drinks, but the sense of accomplishment made it all worthwhile. Next week, we're aiming to shave even more time off our climbs. After all, we need to be in peak condition for the ultimate challenge later this year: the early morning winter solstice sunrise walk. Because who doesn't love the idea of hiking up a hill in freezing temperatures before the crack of dawn? (Did I hear someone volunteer to bring the hot chocolate?) Hiking Safety☀️👣 👉 Don’t hike alone; it is recommended for 4 people or more. 👉 Choose your route carefully & stick to it. Allow yourself enough time – start early. It's handy to take a hardcopy map of the mountain too. 👉 Be prepared: take enough water & wear sunblock / UPF rated clothing, proper hiking boots or walking shoes, and a hat. Check that the weather is hike-friendly the night before, and just before your hike too. Take a warm jacket for mountain hikes as conditions can change rapidly. 👉 Carry at least 500ml of water for every hour you intend to be outdoors, also a bit of emergency food. (Remember hot conditions can be very dangerous for dogs, make sure to carry extra water for them too!) 👉 Tell somebody & plan ahead: it is crucial to inform someone of your intended route & your expected time of return. 👉 Remember to hike with a fully charged cell-phone! How much water should you bring for your pup on hiking adventures? Carry *at least* 8 ounces of water per dog per hour of hiking. It's always a good idea to bring extra in the summer to account for the additional physical exertion of hiking in high temperatures. For humans, the general rule of thumb is to carry at least 1/2 liter of water for every hour you plan to be hiking. Some pet parents like to carry just as much for their pups to ensure they have more than enough to keep them hydrated. While this is always good practice, it's especially important to avoid letting your dog drink standing water (e.g., water from puddles, ponds, and lakes) during this time of year. Hazardous algae (also known as cyanobacteria, which occurs predominantly in summer/warm weather months), parasites, and bacteria can be present and cause your dog to become sick. Of course, our pups can't tell us when they're thirsty, so keep an eye out for cues that they need a water break like heavy panting, slowed walking and reduced energy levels, and thickened saliva. Who’s ready to spend all day in the bush on a hike? Whether you’re walking on your favourite well used hike trail with your hiking buddies or setting out for a solo casual all-day hike, you need to packed and prepaid. Carrying the proper equipment is absolutely critical. When things go wrong, as they often do, this can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a dire result. Before heading out on a full day of hiking, you need to make sure you pack the essentials. These items should be on your hiking Checklist: • Hiking backpack/hydration pack • Weather-appropriate clothing • Hiking boots • Plenty of food • Water • Navigation tools • First-aid kit • Knife or multi-tool • Head lamp/torch • Hat and sunnies • Carry a form of ID It’s also a good idea to let a friend know the date, time frame and location of your hike. That way if you run in to trouble on the hike, your friend will notice you did not call or text to say you made it. This will allow them to send for help or come find you. Today technology has made hiking much easier. Smartphones allow you to map and overlay weather in real time. LED bulbs are bright and last many hours. The small size and low weight of hiking gear today makes this possible to carry more and go longer. Now you are all packed and ready to go, but don’t forget your camera!
