It’s a charge that has been rolled out often enough: artworks so seemingly simple in design that the creative effort involved would apparently not challenge a 5-year-old. At the same time, some of these works are considered to be among the world’s greatest paintings, hanging in important museums, or up for sale in major auction houses with eye-watering price tags. Clearly there is more to it than facile technique, but what, exactly? NEW ARTICLE FROM OUR ART AND MUSEUMS TEAM 🎨   A new decision from the Supreme Court of Tasmania draws the line between illegal discrimination and lawful promotion of equal opportunity in the art sector.   In April 2024, a Tasmanian administrative tribunal found that the art installation “The Ladies Lounge” at the Mona - Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania, constituted illegal discrimination against men.   The reason was simple enough: men were not allowed entry into the Ladies Lounge. 🙅 Thus, the museum was ordered to stop refusing entry to those who did not identify as “ladies”.   This ruling has now been quashed by the Tasmanian Supreme Court.   In this article, we summarize the background of the case and the Supreme Court’s key findings. Changes in life means that life changes. 🙏 *The Vital Role of Art in Challenging Perspectives* In a world inundated with data and rapid changes, the necessity of art often gets overshadowed. Yet, it's precisely during these times of uncertainty and flux that the significance of art becomes more pronounced and needed more desperately than ever. Art serves as both a mirror reflecting our society and a catalyst for change, challenging us to question, evolve, and as always – to grow. Art is not merely about aesthetics; it's a powerful medium for communication, empathy, and understanding. Through various forms like paintings, literature, music, and performance, art provides a platform for diverse voices and perspectives to be heard. It assists our dialogue and fosters empathy by allowing us to step into others' shoes, broadening our worldview. How often these days do we attempt to really understand the viewpoint of another? Or are we simply content with labeling them as "The Other..."? Art for me has a unique ability to challenge us, question us and confront us. It confronts societal norms, biases, and injustices, prompting us to reevaluate our beliefs and perceptions. By pushing boundaries and defying conventions, art inspires innovation and progress. It forces us out of our comfort zones, sparking conversations that (can) lead to meaningful change. In a rapidly changing world where perspectives can become rigid and divisive, art offers a vital counterbalance. It invites us to embrace ambiguity, to explore complexity, and celebrate diversity. As we navigate the myriad of interconnected complexities of our time, let us recognize the indispensable role of art, not just as a source of beauty, but as a catalyst for introspection, empathy, and transformation. What if, rather than any of those things, we thought of graffiti as a monument? How would that change our understanding of graffiti, and, in turn, our understanding of monument? In Monumental Graffiti, curator and anthropologist Rafael Schacter focuses on the material, communicative, and contextual aspects of these two forms of material culture to provide a timely perspective on public art, citizenship, and the city today. He applies monument as a lens to understand graffiti and graffiti as a lens to comprehend monument, challenging us to consider what the appropriate monument for our contemporary world could be. https://lnkd.in/eMZZ3dvh

And that’s number 25! Over the past year, we have been illustrating 25 essential skills for curators, giving a glimpse of the day-to-day life of art museum curators. This list of 25 skills is neither complete, nor definitive. Research commissioned by CODART in 2023 has shown that the job of curator has changed a lot over the past decennia. This will undoubtedly continue in the years to come: some of the 25 skills presented in this series may become irrelevant or obsolete, while new skills we can’t even think of now will emerge. In the 25th and final video in the series, Friso Lammertse and Tamar van Riessen (respectively Curator and Junior Curator of 17th-Century Dutch Painting, Rijksmuseum) discuss what skills the curator of the future will need.
